We seldom fly, but often drive to the US. I know that fruit is a no-no (so sad, oranges would be great) but are there any restrictions on whether or not you can bring back other foods - like the giant mickey rice krispy treats or something like that??

I don't plan on bringing home lots of food - but if I buy treats for people I want to be sure its not going to end up in the garbage at the airport.

From what I read on the Cdn site - its just honey, eggs, meat and fruit/veg's that are a concern.

When we went last year we brought back about 12 mickey mouse rice krispy heads as souvenirs and we didn't have any problems. We also brought back lollipops, chip'ndale' fruit and nut mix, and princess cookies. We flew back Westjet.

Thank you!!! Glad to hear you can get those treats there too, I'd like to bring stuff back for my kids' friends.

We brought back rice krispy treats, cookies, and lots of chocolate to give as gifts. I think all they really care about at customs are meat and produce.

I believe there is a way to get fresh Florida oranges shipped to Canada. At least there was a couple of years ago. Not sure about now, but my parents have a condo near Tampa and used to ship a large box up every winter. It was a company that would ship them directly rather than my parents transporting them across the border. I could find out who they were if you are interested (and if that is still allowed).

That would be great if you could!!! My in-laws tried to send a christmas wreath made of fruit to my parents from the US to Nova Scotia and the company said they couldn't send it - so they got brownies instead! :rotfl:

I always bring oranges and grapefruit back. It isn't a question that is asked when I come back. Just...how long away, how much did you spend, alcohol or tobacco. It's pretty obvious at March break where we are coming from. I've never had a problem. As for food, my Mom and I were grocery shopping in the U.S. yesterday. The only issue is usually meat....we are allowed 1 turkey/piece and so many pounds of beef ( I want to say 10 but not sure about that). There are more restrictions going in to the U.S. with food than coming into Canada. That is my experience.

I never knew there was an issue with us bringing food from the states back into Canada....never had a problem, from oranges to meat.....they never ask. I know it seems you can't bring anything into the states from Canada, they pretty much frown on everything anymore after the mad cow scare. :sad2:

There is no issue with bringing any type of citrus fruit home with you. I have yet to find the Canadian citrus groves that would be impacted by such an import.

We cross-border grocery shop.

There are limits on the amount of poultry, eggs and dairy (pretty generous limits).

Never a problem... and you don't pay taxes on groceries!!!

Oranges... we brought a big bag home from Florida... no issues.

We brought back a bag of oranges from 'Orange World.' They have a wb-site I think that you can order direct from. I plan to this Christmas- they taste soooooo good! ;)

This is the company that my parents used to ship oranges to us. They were soooo good! Theres nothing like fresh oranges.

This was from their FAQ section:

Do you ship fruit overseas?
We do not ship outside the continental US and Canada at this time

Thanks very much!!! I always bring home food from the US when I drive but didn't really know if I was supposed to be. I saw a reality show on TV recently (US) about their border services and they fined a guy 500.00 for having a sandwich in his luggage (his mom packed it) and he didn't declare it.

I find all the Cdn boarder is worried about is how much duty they can charge you when you come back (at the St. Stephen/Calais border anyway)
