Question About Borrowing

We've been DVC members since 2011, but it's been awhile since we've booked anything, so I want to make sure I have this right. Our use year is April and we own 180 points. We've used up our 2016 points already and borrowed some from 2017. We'll have 141 points left from 2017.

We're looking to go to Aulani (not our home resort) for 4 nights next June, and knowing it's a busy time for DVC then, I want to have flexibility with room type/view. Ideally we'd love a 1bd standard which would not require us to borrow points, but they're already gone most of our nights. We're not willing to go to a studio with two teens, so we'll try first for 1bd any view then 2bd.

So I know I'll need to borrow points from 2018, but how much depends on what room type I can get. We have to borrow the points before booking the reservation, correct? And once we borrow the points, we can't put them back into 2018 points, right? So say I borrow 100 points, but then I waitlist a 1bd standard and get it and don't need the points, what happens to those points I borrowed? Do they have to be used before April 2018?

You cannot borrow points until you are actually making the reservation that will use them. If you book online & need to borrow to complete the reservation, the option to borrow will be available to you as part of the process. If you call MS to book, the CM will take care of it for you. So no need to worry about borrowing too many points in your situation.

But to answer your question, once borrowed, points stay in the use year into which they were borrowed. So if you have to cancel the Aulani reservation, any points you borrowed to make it will expire at the end of your 2017 use year.

But if your reservation leaves you with extra points after borrowing, like in the instance of a 1 bedroom waitlist opening up, you could use the borrowed points and bank the current year points into the next year, as long as you are within your banking window, right?

Yes, if you were to waitlist for a room requiring fewer points than the reservation you were holding and it used a combo of banked or borrowed along with current points then the current points would be returned and you could bank them.
