Question about Boma???

My husband and I are really interested in trying Boma with all the rave reviews we keep hearing. We are generally not very adventurous with our dining choices, not because we don't want to be, but because we just stick to what we know. My kids have picked up those same eating habits.

We are staying on the DDP, and trying to try some different things. Is Boma off the wall as far as ethnic food, or pretty moderate. I am really concerned that we might get there and not like the food. Is it pretty safe to say that there is going to be some selection for everyone? I read a review that said there is a lot of curry. Is this true - because I can't stand curry flavoring.

I would love any input. I need to make this last dinner reservation. We were going to try something at MGM, but am just not completely interested in anything there and would love to try something new and unique. Do you say try Boma's or stick to something at MGM?

Thanks in advance.

I was very hesitant myself about trying Boma's because I was allergic to milk as a child and because I always ate my food plain I still do not eat much with sauces. I found they had plenty to eat that was not too unusual to me. Also the fresh fruit selection there was one of the best. They have a children's section with mac and cheese and such for those not willing to try but many things were meat marinated in Afriacan spices (and they were great). They also had a large variety of salads although I did find most of the bread to be rather dry.

I don't eat curry or anything spicy and I found lots of food that I enjoyed. I think that it would be well worth going again.

I am the same as far as sticking to what I know and like. I tried Boma on our last trip and did not feel like it was very ethnic. There were lots of "normal" items not too many curries.

IMHO - stay away from Boma! My DH and one of my DS's are also not adventurous, although my older DS and myself are. For the money we spent on the meal, the food was not worth it all. We didn't even really care much for the desserts. Many people on these boards love Boma, but after eating at nearly every Disney restaurant there is, this is one of the very few we would not return to. Nearly everything I tried I didn't like. (And I like everything) Maybe it was curry - I don't know. It was just really gross.

We are actually staying at AKL this year and are eating breakfast @ Boma's one morning. We ate there last year for dinner and weren't that pleased. The atmosphere and service are excellent. I consider us pretty adventurous eaters we like different cuisines and flares. But Boma is an original experience. In fact someone suggested to me yesterday on the dis that since we were staying at AKL why weren't we eating there. They also posted some breakfast pictures and it seems as though it's what we are used to so we're going to try it. It's not that the food isn't good, I did LOVE the zebra domes and enjoyed the potatos, they were a mixture of white and sweet potatos and they were great as well as some ribs. Other than that we were beyond our relm of adventure. I would try it but just be aware that it is very different.

Actually, it's worth going to Boma's just to see AKL. It is a beautiful resort the lobby is breathtaking.

I'd be very cautious about trying something based only on the rave reviews. If you read carefully, some people love Boma, others were disappointed. We didn't like it either, but to a certain extent it was more about the expectations than the actual food. With all the rave reviews, our expectations were for a great meal, not merely a good one. It couldn't have lived up to the expectations.

We are adventurous eaters and didn't find the food that adventurous at all. Part of our disappointment. Its a lot of sweet/savory - more cardamom and cinnamon in the food than curry.

Same with me, I kept identifying a common flavor to all the dishes. I asked my waiter, and he said it was CURRY. I hate curry. I ended up eating PB&J's off the kids buffet. My husband, on the other hand, loved it. I do have to disagree on the desserts, I thought some of them were divine!

It's one of those you just have to try. Most people like it, some love it, some hate it. More love it than hate it. It's a little bit different, but not overly so. Nothing is going to shoot flames out of your mouth when you eat it. It's not that spicy. A couple things had some pop. A couple more had a bit of zing. But the rest wasn't all that big a problem with hot spices. Give it a try. You'll never know unless you do.

I found the soups delicious, hated most of the salads, liked most of the hot food items. There were a couple that were blech, but just take a tiny portion of things your first two times up and taste em. Don't get em all mixed up. Find the ones you really like, then load yourself up a plate.

I didn't find the food spicy at all. It was all sweet. IMO everything was sweet- even the soup. I was glad they had chicken strips and mac and cheese there.

I loved the breakfast though. :thumbsup2

To each his own I guess. I know I won't eat at Bomas for dinner again.

I would call Boma "moderate" ethnic food. Like rabx5 said, I found most of it to be sweet. I absolutely "hate" curry (at least the curry that I get in the U.S.) and I stayed away from anything that said it had curry in it. But, I'm not sure what the other stuff was seasoned with. It was sweet and different and nothing that I can identify, but I really liked it. The soups were all very good. The salads looked a little weird but I tried a few and really enjoyed their refreshing taste. The watermelon rind soup reminded me a lot of *something* that I used to eat in Japan but God only knows what it was! The meats were all very good. The dessert bar was "just fine". I found that the Cape May Clam Bake has a MUCH more decadent dessert bar.

All in all, my whole family really enjoyed the buffet because the food was just a bit different. We tried to get another ADR during our stay but could not get in.

Boma offers enough variety for nearly every palette. My husband is a meat and potatoes kinda guy and he loved it!

Not only that, but visiting AKL is an added benefit.

We loved the food, service and atmosphere!

Stick to something at Mgm! I saw the word picky, and that means Boma is not for you! They have like , kus kus, calimari salad,*other things I cant purnounce*, and for kids (and adults) they have macaroni and cheese and french fries. There dessert is good though. I personally disliked it and I am picky!

We went there last week and I hated it!! I would never go back. I do not like spicy food at all, although I like European, Chinese, and Mexican food. I could not find one thing I liked except for the Kalamata Olive hummus and the chocolate zebra desserts. DH likes weird food and he loved it. They did have PB&J, chicken strips, and mac-n-cheese for the kids. I also did not care for the atmosphere. I felt like we were in a big cafeteria.

After we ate, we walked around the lodge outside and saw lots of wild animals so that part was cool. But I hated the food. JMHO!
