Question about beginning to do designs

I was wondering if someone could help me. I'm looking to purchase some software to do some basic designs. I was looking at photoshop elements. But there are many different versions. I understand that the newer ones will have many new features but do I necessarily need all those or could I get by with purchasing an older one? Just wondering what software people on here use and if they like it.

Probably the newer ones would have more features but I personally use version 5.0. I figure it works for me, so no need to learn something new at this time. So, it really is a personal decision.

I use version 10 of Photoshop Elements. Does everything I could want.

I use Photoshop Elements 10 as well. I like it and it does what I need. Plus my friend got PSE11 and it didn't do some of the things I could with PSE10. I would start out with a less expensive one and see how you like it. You can always get another one later on down the road if you need to.
