Question about bedding

My DH got me a bed for Christmas and I need to buy all new bedding for it (we went from full size to queen size). This might sound stupid, but I've never had a full bed before -- just a headboard with a frame, and I've always used a bed skirt.

What kind of bed skirt or dust ruffle would you use on a bed like this? Or would you use one at all. Hubby thinks not, but the box spring sticks up a good 10 inches above the sideboards. http://www.greatpricedfurniture.com/products/9074.html (this isn't it, but it's similar to what he got me) The mattress and box spring make the bed extremely TALL.

Anyway, I know it's a dumb question, but like I said I've never owned a bed like this.

ETA: I don't even know how a bed skirt would go on it anyway... is there something to just cover the box springs?

We have a bed similar to that and we do not have a skirt on it. We actually have a skirt that came with the comforter but it looked dippy and covered up the beautiful wood. So, we just use the comforter - which is long enough to cover the large king size mattresses and tuck under the mattress for a clean line look.

A good comforter should be plenty long to cover the mattresses. If it doesn't, you could always purchase a skirt later to cover the rest.

We have a bed similar to that & do use a bedskirt. The trick is to get a skirt with 4 separate end pieces instead of the ends being sewn together--the ends are split.

I probably wouldn't use a skirt at all but the comforter isn't quite long enough on the sides to cover up the box spring.

No, you wouldn't use a skirt with that. As Aimeedyan said, if you buy a good quality comforter (read: expensive) it should cover everything.

If it sits inside (or partially inside) the rails I would just get another fitted sheet that matches your set and use that to cover the mattress. I'm betting that is the least expensive way to do it, and it will match, look nice and keep the box spring protected.

OMG! :earseek: I just started looking up the price of comforters and I'm in sticker shock. There go my kids' college educations. :rotfl2: I haven't had to buy one because when DH and I got married, one of his aunts gave us an incredible set because she worked at a linen store, and we got a few other sets as wedding gifts that have all lasted us this long!

Ahutton, thanks for the idea of using a fitted sheet. That should help keep it clean (it's off white). I bet it would look nice too.

I'm having a hard time picturing this in my head, but how does the bed skirt hang over the slats under the box springs? Or don't you have slats?

We have a sleigh bed, similar in design to that one. We have a bed skirt on, but you really can't even see it. I'd take it off, but the king mattress is too dang heavy! LOL

So, I vote "no" - no bed skirt is necessary

If you have a Tuesday Morning store in your area they have GREAT deals on very nice comforters, and will also sell fitted sheets that are not in a set. Bed Bath and Beyond does too - you can just buy a couple fitted sheets in coordinating colors.
