Question about AP magic bands

In the pinned thread "Everything you need to know about MagicBands."
It states:
"Q: Do I need to wait to activate my AP to get by magicbands?
A: Maybe. Some disboard posters have reported being able to and some have reported they still need to wait for a new AP to be activated first. There seems to be no reason why some get it and most do not but my thought is check after you've made your final payment for your trip and if it if appears as an option."

I just bought my AP online, I have looked through the MDE and I can't see a place to customize my MB. So I am probably one of the unlucky ones who can't customize until after I activate my AP. However, just to be sure, can someone direct me to where I would look for the option to customize (just in case I am missing something)?

When you buy an AP, a MB won't pop up to be customized until after you go to Disney and activate the pass in person. Anyone that was able to customize an AP MB right after purchasing was just a fluke and is not the norm.

Once you activate the pass it'll pop up in mde that you have a band able to customize. To see this you'll click "My Magicbands and Cards" and on the screen where it shows all your magic bands and cards, on top it'll say you have a band to customize

That is correct unless you are staying onsite then your free MB will work with your AP as long as you have it on the right MDE account. It takes a couple weeks to a month to get your free AP magicband. I don't know if they send sliders any more but if you have stayed onsite with in the last 2 years and have one of those MBs you can use that one seamlessly for your AP.

No, at least not that one specific band. The AP isn't active until you activate it at Disney. So the system doesn't prompt a magic band to be shipped until the pass is activated.

If you're on site then you'll receive those bands ahead of time, or you can use any previous bands you've had or any if you choose to buy in the park

The AP MB is no different than the band you get when you stay on site except they send a little slider with it. Most people tend to not wear the slider because it can slide right off when you take the band off and it can kind of rub you. There is no advantage to wearing it, you will still need to show your discount card and an ID to get the discount, although I did have one CM at a restaurant say and you will get an AP discount when I was ordering so I'm assuming he saw the slider.

FYI: My AP band came without the slider, but did have a note that the sliders are on back order.
