Question about an expired AP

Hello DIS experts... I have a question. I got APs for myself and my DGD6 last year, and they were set to expire this month. I renewed mine because I'm taking a trip this month, but I'm not taking my DGD6 until December so I let hers lapse and will get her a new one in December.

Has anyone reactivated an expired AP, and if so, do they just reactivate the card you have, or do they issue a new card? I'm asking because my DGD6 wants to have her AP card to play with in her purse and I'm not sure if I should hold onto it or not.

I think it should be safe to let her play with it. Don't approach it as reactivating an old one in December, just go and buy her a "new" AP.

Whenever I've let my AP lapse by more than a month, they've always issued a new AP when I've bought the new one. The photo was re-used from a previous one (along with the email account for Disneyland.com), but the AP number changes. So you should be okay letting her play with the existing AP that will be allowed to expire. Just make sure you do something to mark it so that you know which one is the expired one and which is the valid one when you get the new one!

Last year ours expired by only a day & they re-issued new cards to us. We still got the discount to renew as they said we had 60 days after expiration. So it looks like they give new cards when you go to the park to renew.

Actually, that brought up a good point GenGen22. Wasn't it last year when they stopped issues APs with expiration dates on them? Previously, the AP were all re-issued when renewed so that the correct expiration date could be printed on the back, but the current APs don't have the expiration date printed anymore. So, in theory, if you kept renewing, you should be able to re-use the same card for years. I still don't think it will impact "new" AP purchases, but things might be different for folks that are trying to renew their APs this year.

I've read reports that the renewal discount is not offered if the AP has expired, even if only by one day (although this can depend on the CM). If I remember correctly, the last two times we renewed, we kept the same cards. And we are very careful to renew before our expiration date so we can keep the discount.

There was a grace period last year but I read a report from someone that said they were turned down after the most recent price increase. I know I got a letter about my AP that said if I don't renewed my parking benefit by the expiration date no exceptions will be made. To me that implies there are circumstances where they could extend the discount, but like FP return enforcement, I wouldn't count on it anymore.

Exactly. It seems like Disney is trying to get passholders to renew before the expiration date, and getting rid of the post-expiration grace period might be part of that. As usual, it really depends on the CM doing the transaction, but I wouldn't want to risk it.

When I bought my AP this past December the CM who gave it to me specifically said that this is the same AP card I will always use, even when I renew, and even if I don't renew but then decide to renew again years later, so don't lose it! This was just one CM though, they could have been mistaken.

Thank you. :) I think I'll hold onto it just to be safe.

ok, my experience will differ from what everyone else seems to be saying. In November, DH went to get a "new" AP as his had expired several months earlier. They wanted him to use his old AP (the physical pass), which he didn't have, not thinking he would need it. They gave him a new one, but acted like they were doing him a big favor by not charging him the replacement card fee.

It seems odd that they'd expect you to have a card for something that was expired, but who knows. They're always looking to cut costs. Anyway, you can hold on to it, but not let them know you have it. Then see what happens. If they give you a new one you can give her the old one to play with. If they ask for the old one then you have it to give. I don't know that I want to save mine to reuse them 18 months after they expire, which is likely when we'll go back again.
