Question about a reservation

Just got off the phone with DVC reservations. I booked OKW for April 2014.
I had 48 pts left in 2013 and 300 for 2014. My use year is October.
I asked what would happen if we had to cancel for some reason and she said all of the pts would have to be used by Sept 30, 2014. Just checking to see if that's correct. Thanks!

If you mean that the 48 points were from the period 10/1/12 - 9/30/13 (i.e., banked into 2013) and the 300 were from 10/1/13-9/30/14, then I would expect that just the 48 points would need to be used by 9/30/14, not the 300. (You should be able to bank the 300 into 2014, unless you cancelled after your banking deadline in which case you would have to use them by 9/30/14.)

Unless, somehow, you used the 48 points from your 2012 allotment and the 300 were borrowed from your 2014 allotment, which I think you would have mentioned. ;-)

The 48 points were from 2013. The 270 pts were from 2014 with an October use year.

An April 2014 stay falls within your Oct 2013 UY (Oct 1, 2013 - Sep 30, 2014). It sounds like you borrowed points from your Oct 2014 UY when booking that stay. Once borrowed, those points stay in your Oct 2013 UY if you cancel your trip and will expire on Sep 30, 2014 if you don't use them for a stay that takes place prior to the expiry date.

I think I'm the one who's dense. The 48 points were for the period 10/12-9/13 or 10/13-9/14? Because if it's the first, then those would have to be used by the end of 9/14. (In other words, were they banked into the next year?) If they are from the 10/13-9/14 timeframe, you could bank them into the next use year -- the 10/14-9/15 timeframe.

The 270 points -- 10/13-9/14 or 10/14-9/15? If the first, they could be banked into the 10/14-9/15 timeframe *if* you haven't missed the banking deadline (which depends on when you cancel and when that deadline is; I have a June UY and a January deadline, so if your October UY has a deadline of April and you cancel right before your trip I could see where you might have to use those points before the end of 9/14.) If those 270 points are actually borrowed from the 10/14 - 9/15 timeframe then they definitely have to be used before 9/14 because they can't be put back into the original timeframe.

It's really confusing because the year that the points can be used technically, in your case, does *not* begin with January but with October. So when you say "the 270 points were from 2014" I don't know if you mean the points that are normally available during the majority of 2014 (the 10/13-9/14 use year) or the ones that begin with October 2014 (the 10/14-9/15 use year.) No wonder you wanted to ask for clarification! LOL. And, of course, a good part of the answer depends on just when you cancel -- if you cancel tomorrow, you'd have some more time to figure out what you can do and cannot do. If you cancel a week ahead of time, your options become .... not necessarily more limited, but certainly decisions would have to be made more quickly.

Yes all of the points will expire on Sept 30, 2013. You had to borrow the points and they can not be put back if you cancel the reservation.

That may not be exactly correct.

If the 2013 points were not banked 2012 points then if you did cancel more than 31 days out those points could still be banked by May 31, 2014 into your 2014 UY. The borrowed 2014 points would need to be used or would expire by 9/30/14 though.

I didn't have any of the points banked.
Just wanted to make sure. I'm not anticipating cancelling but then you never know.

Usually I have extra pts but this year one of my friends had a very tough time and I sent she and her daughter to WDW on my 252 of my 2013 pts. They were well spent.

I've not been in this position before and didn't know if I had received the right information.
