Query re: Tipping

We arrive early to our hotel and if a room isn't ready we plan to leave our bags and go enjoy lunch. Do you tip bell services when you leave your suitcase or retrieve it?

Tipping bell services is alot like tipping in a restaurant, that is, everyone has their own way of doing it.

At WDW hotels, there is no way to know if the same person will be bringing your bags to the room or not. I've had the person actually point tidbit that out to me, attempting to get the tip right there.

If there is a gap between drop off and room delivery, I usually split the tip. That way, both handlers get a part of it, and nobody gets shafted. On the occassion where the same person takes the bag and stands nearby while you check in, and will be taking it to the room with you, I tip on the room delivery end only. (Note - This usually is not the case at WDW hotels, and I split it almost every time).

I usually do not unload the car until I have a room assigned. If I have others traveling with me who can go to the room with the bellman and bags, they are tipped when the delivery is complete. If I'm on a solo trip, where I have to drop off the bags, park the car, go to the room, and then call for delivery, I split the tip - half to the person who unloads and half to the person who delivers.

Used to be $1 per bag, now I figure $2 per bag. Any decent hotel should have some tip sharing between bellmen.

Cool that was going to be my question, how much to tip bellmen.

I know some tip housekeeping, and if the driver handles your bags on DME lots will tip. Any other folks that get tipped in your travels at places like US or WDW?

At a moderate resort I would tip the maid $5/day. I tip most servers above and beyond whatever the Dining Plan pays (unless service is bad) so they get at least 20 percent. The valets should also be tipped if you use them (anywhere from $2-5). I tip the bartender or whoever fills up my "free" refillable mug, too (usually $1).
