Quality Inn on Manchester or HoJo - Help me decide.

I am planning a trip to Disneyland for the end of January, and I am trying to decide whether I should book a economy hotel called The Quality Inn (on Manchester), or the Howard Johnson, which is very close by.

The Quality Inn has a much lower rate. It's about $62 a night, and from the pictures it looks fine.

The Howard Johnson which is a moderate hotel is almost $100 a night.

I have been to Disneyland in the past, and have stayed at the Candy Cane Inn, and the Hilton Anaheim. Both of those are more expensive, and I really liked the fact that the Candy Cane Inn had their own bus.

I am really trying to keep the cost of my trip down. I understand the Quality Inn has a continental breakfast.

If anyone has stayed at these hotels, it would be nice to have some feedback.

Thanks.

First of all, I have never stayed at Quality Inn. I would stay at Hojos. We always stay there and I don't mind paying a little more for it because I know I will be happy there. I would book it and keep watching for entertainment rates. If your dates come up you can get a room for as low as $59. Here is the link to watch for your dates:

For us, the fact that they don't have a free breakfast isn't a huge deal. We just bring some breakfast foods.

Also, just in case you don't know -- you can get a 15% off discount at Hojos just by being a member of these boards.

I have stayed at both hotels. Quality Inn is a dump! Do not be fooled by the pictures. The rooms look nice, but I felt it was a bad remodel of a very old motel. I cannot comment on the breakfast.

Others can comment on the current status of the HOJO. I really liked the rooms when I stayed there 5 years ago.

We almost always stay at HoJos and love it there. I have not personally stayed at Quality Inn, but my in-laws did when making a quick budget trip last year. My mother-in-law wished she'd spent more money and stayed somewhere else.

I agree! I was not happy at all with this hotel and the parking situation was just horrible. The breakfast was nothing to brag about, simple donuts, cereals and fruit..

I have stayed at Hojo's quite a few times and I LOVE it there! The rooms are nice and big, the staff very friendly and it's just a short walk down Harbor to the parks.

Call the hotel directly and see if they have any discounts available for your stay (AAA or Entertainment card)

Thanks for the speedy reply. I have a friend from another website who always stays at the Quality Inn. She is planning on staying there again, and has offered to share a room with me.

I have never stayed at the Howard Johnson, but I have heard great things about it. I am sure that I will qualify for some kind of a discount. I have a AAA card. I didn't know anything about a Disboard discount. How does one go about getting that?

Thanks for all your feedback.

Nobody wants to get stuck in a bad hotel. It can make a vacation less than magical for sure.

I just got back from a stay at the Quality Inn. I wouldn't say it was a bad motel. I would stay again for the right price.

The breakfast consisted of make it yourself waffles, english muffins, bread/toast, cereal, oranges, hard boiled eggs, apple or orange juice, coffee, donuts, and danishes.

The beds are not all that comfortable but they aren't the worst I've ever slept on. The rooms were clean. You get a refrigerator. The biggest complaint I had was the low shower heads. I am 5'7" and the shower head wasn't even above my shoulders. I had to duck quite a bit to get my head wet.

I didn't drive this time so I can't comment on the previous posters comment about parking but whenever I walked through the lot their were empty parking spaces.

The walk is about 10 minutes to the DL gates the first time. After that it edges to about 20 minutes when you are tired and your feet hurt. It was almost 25-30 minutes that last time I made that walk! I was exhausted and my feet were dying and every step took so much effort.

If you call the HoJo to ask about discounts, be sure to call the local # and ask for IN-HOUSE RESERVATIONS. The national Howard Johnsons reservation # won't be able to help you, although they will try to make you believe you are talking to the hotel directly and giving you the best rate possible.

As a side note to this, is the in house reservations line for the hotel is closed on Sundays. I had a problem with the reservation I had made when checking out the hotel from my Oct visit, for our surprise family visit in Feb, so I emailed them, and it was fixed the next day, with a new confirmation sent with it reflecting the changes. I personally think that you can't go wrong with them, and can't highly reccomend them enough. I stayed with them earlier this month, and have planned another stay with them in Feb with the family. The best idea of where a hotel is at is the number of return customers, and since our stay in Feb/09 we have stayed at HOJO's for all our trips to the mouse. You can't beat their customer service, cleanliness of the hotel, and great staff.

I have stayed at both places.

The HoJo would be my first choice of the two. It is nicer and even though there's no breakfast, McD's is right on the way to the DL crosswalk. My room was large, comfy, and clean. Would I stay here again ... without a doubt, and in fact I will be a couple times soon.

The QI is your basic motel. We only stayed here one night before moving to the GCH (we stayed there to save DVC points on a Sat night stay). We stayed in a room with a queen bed and the room was SMALL. The bed basically took up the whole room. There was a bedside table and spot for the TV, other wise you just had enough room to walk around the bed. It was an OK room. We didn't try the breakfast. Would I stay here again ... I would consider it, but it wouldn't be my first pick. And it would have to be a super deal.

were staying at the Q inn in may (I was out voted on the hojo) and i have a question. I've read that there is a path from Q inn to harber blvd, is this true?
otherwise it looks like you would have to walk down manchester to harber then back up to the disney entrance
thanks

Like I stated above. I was just there last week and I don't know about any path. I had read that there was one also but when I asked how to get to DL at the front desk they said I had to follow manchester around the corner (you walk past HoJo) to harbor blvd and then down to DL.

As far as I know there is no shortcut path. I drove back around QI looking for one, on a map it looks as though you could cut through behind the Fairfield Inn but there is a wall there and you can't. It's a longish walk going around Manchester then out to Harbor. From the outside it didn't look that great either. Kinda dumpy. We stayed at HOJO last week and it was my fifth time staying there. The rooms are large and comfy. There is a fridge and some room categories have microwaves. We always bring breakfast food and eat in the room. Plus the pool area is very nice and if you have kids the Pirates water play area can't be beat.
