Hello everyone

Yesterday a dumptruck plowed into the (Toronto bound) Burlington Skyway bridge http://www.newstalk1010.com/news/20...harges-pending-in-burlington-skyway-collision I could be closed for a while and we were planning on doing some shopping on Sat in Buf.

Does anyone know a secondary route around this mess to hit the Milton area? I have taken highway 6 to 403 across the top of Hamilton but never gone back that way. Would that work? Any other ideas?

Hope this isn't too late but my suggestion is to go to GOOGLE MAPS. Input where you're leaving from and use Buffalo NY as your destination. You will notice the words "ROUTE OPTIONS" in lower case letters to the bottom right. If you click on that a box will open up giving you the chance to select "avoid highways" The route it shows is definitely gonna take longer but i would imagine everything is gonna be backed up and a mess! You possibly able to wait a week? (or more since a site i looked at gives a quote of "possibly weeks" for the closure :scared:)

Sorry if this isn't much help

Thanks for the google map suggestion-what I was thinking is how do people from Kitchener/Cambridge head down to Niagara area, maybe if I was to go across the 401 and then down from there? Any one from the west who might know?

From KW/cambridge/Guelph, we always take 401 to 6 South to QEW, which takes us over the skyway bridge. If you want to avoid the mess, I think you'd have to go through Hamilton/ Stoney Creek.

We'd planned to do some shopping in the US the week after next. I hope the bridge is reopened by then. Good luck making alternate driving plans.

If you notice, i LIVE in Guelph and I also end up crossing that bridge, that's why i tried to find you a different route. Sorry :(

We got stuck in that mess on the way home from a shopping trip to Buffalo yesterday. We left Buffalo at 430pm got home to Mississauga at 9:15pm!

How to avoid.

Going to Buffalo -
407 to 403
403 to Linc.
Linc to Red Hill Valley Pwy
Red Hill to QEW.

On the Map it looks like a large detour but you'll be doing 100k plus so its ok time wise. Coming home from USA just reverse the route.

Yes use the Red Hill and the Linc. Will take you all the way around Hamilton and back to the 403.

The skyway Niagara bound is open. I take this on a daily basis. It's busy but it's no busier then usual. Toronto bound is what's busy with everyone getting off on Eastport & then back on the hwy after the Skyway.

LOL-oops, I see that now! Thanks for the info everyone. I talked to my cousin who works out that way and he said it wasnt that bad because everyone who could avoid it did. Hmmm, not sure if heading to Buffalo will be worth sitting in traffic on the way back but i guess we will make a choice in the morning.

Quick update for anyone else considering going to Buffalo or Niagara this weekend. We left very early-7:30-and had no issues getting there with the exception of a few rubberneckers slowing waaay down to see the truck still stuck in the bridge. The border crossing was busy as expected but coming home was smooth sailing. No line ups crossing back and we had a wee delay at Eastport drive, maybe 10 minutes but got through and home quickly!:)

Thanks for that! We were thinking and then rethinking about going on Monday. I think we'll just take the chance and go.

If you can get to Barton Street and Woodward in Hamilton and go to Woodward, it turns into Eastport and you miss a lot of the traffic, then go across the lift bridge and then back on to the QEw. Its just getting to Barton. My suggestion would be to get off well before Centennial Pkwy where they are pulling everyone off like say at Fruitland road and taking Barton across.

Pack your patience, lots of construction and lots of people trying to get around this mess.

Glad to hear you got there & back without much delay. Coming home from work last night at 10pm the truck was gone so hopefully Toronto bound will be reopened soon, I believe they said they were aiming for Monday. They were working on it last night. Now that the trucks gone the structural damage does not look to bad, it's bad but not as bad as you would think due to what happened.
