I just read the sad news that Qantas is pulling out of the Auckland to L.A. route in May. They have been flying that route for years and we had good flights on our trip last year. With them gone, it leaves Air NZ with a total monopoly on direct flights from Auckland to L.A. so I can imagine the fares are going to up, up and up. Boo hoo, that makes another U.S. trip an even more distant dream for me :sad2:

Oh wow! Not good. :sad2:
I'd only been looking yesterday at Qantas flights from Lax that came home to Sydney via Auckland! They were the cheapest return fares available to us with qantas.

Qantas just seem to be offloading so many routes these days. I have friends that booked Qatas flights to the UK last year but now they have been switched to BA because Qantas dumped the routes.

All these little things Qantas do really annoy me, maybe Richard Branson will step up and add a new route to his fleet, Virgin are awesome...

Gosh yes that would be great as I would love to give V a try after reading all the positive comments from the Aussies on these boards :thumbsup2

I have since been reminded that we are supposely getting direct Auckland to Houston flights starting sometime next year. It was going to be operated by Continental but now it will be United using brand new Dreamliners. Must admit I had never considered flying United without in-seat T.V.'s but presume these new planes will have them. So, although QF pulling out reduces our options for Disneyland, United coming in increases our options for Disneyworld!

travel mum i think Richard Branson will do that.
but I dont think I will fly Qantas again I Love Virgin now!!!

Oooo, that does suck. We fly back to LA about once a year to visit my family, so that will hurt a bit. I like Air NZ but it is a bit more expensive most of the time. Hmmm, hopefully someone else opens something up.

I'm not holding my breath on that route - it was supposed to be operational late 2011.

Qantas axed London -Bangkok and London - Hong Kong too. Loads flights going, business must be bad. I'm very thankful we booked our Air NZ flights for September last year when they were 30% off and they threw in the Paraparaumu to AKL leg for free, we got a steal and even moreso if they put pricing up. At least Air NZ is putting on direct flights to Bali this year - that'll be an option for us for holidays.
