Putting an edible image on a cake

I am not a chef & I typically go for store bought cakes. I do know how to make a basic cake though.

I am thinking of buying an edible image to put on my DD's birthday cake. She LOVES the character Daniel Tiger and I found a listing on Ebay that sells an edible image, & will add my DD's name on it.

Anyone have any experience with these? Are they hard to work with or "assemble"? Anything I need to be aware of or are they just sort of like a sticker?

Thanks!

I don't know if it's the same as what you're seeing online, but I had a local bakery do this for a cake for my DH. Basically you send them the image you want and they print it on a thin layer of fondant and then put that on top of the cake. It's "edible" in that you won't die from eating it, but it did not taste good and actually we ended up just taking it off the cake and tossing it after the presentation. Not sure if there have been any "developments" to make it tastier in the last few years or not!

Thank you-that's good to know-it didn't occur to me that it might not taste good. I'm trying to do a Daniel Tiger themed birthday (my DD's favorite tv show) & not having much luck finding cake ideas for a "non-baker." I was excited to come across the edible image.....hmmm...

It might be different through different bakers. What I would say, though, is that you definitely don't have to order through eBay. I wouldn't want to deal with the shipping, etc. You can contact most bakeries and they have the ability to print out an edible image if you have the file for them.

I've ordered cakes from Sam's Club bakery for a couple of receptions I've done with edible images on them.

I just had to supply the image to them and they scanned and printed it. The picture was part of the frosting on the cake, and we didn't notice any difference in flavor.

I found it's best to supply an image that's as detailed as possible and the size you want it on the cake.

These have come a long way over the years At work a few months ago a cake was done at a bakery with an edible image It was beautiful and did not taste like anything other than the cake & the frosting I wouldn't buy anything edible on eBay though ( and I have seen them there ) Doesn't seem safe & sanitary to me

Thank you! We don't live near a Sam's Club, but we do live near a BJ's and Costco. I wonder if they would scan an image for us.

I have purchased the edible images off of ebay. In fact, the last one I purchased ended up being from someone that lived a mile away and works at my sons school. Needless to say, I saved on shipping!

Anyway, it is easy to do. If I remember right it I put it in the freezer for about 30 seconds right before transferring the image. The ones I have purchased came with directions.

You are most welcome Have a few bites for me I sure miss going to BJs Went there all the time when I lived in NY we have them here but so far away it's an all day project

You at least used to be able to get the images printed at the local Baskin Robbins.
