We have a bunch of snacks, case of water, sunscreen, etc. leftover at the GCH. If I leave it in the room can housekeeping keep the items? Or should I leave it in the communal area on our floor?

Housekeeping will dispose of them. Doesn't matter if they are left in the room or a common area.

If you're a member of the Grand Californian Facebook group, many people post their leftover goodies there. Most of the time, they'll set it outside of their door or put it in a specific part of the hallway so people know where to get it. Housekeeping will probably enjoy any snacks or drinks, though!

Pre-Covid if you left a note saying 'This is for Mousekeeping, Thank You' I think they were free to keep them if they wanted to. With Covid, now I'm not so sure.

Take the snacks and sunscreen home with you. You paid for it, keep it. Leave the water case with a sign that says "free" next to the elevators. Guarantee someone will grab it and take it.

Why would you leave used sunscreen? That's kinda gross ...

I don't think it's "used" per se. You know - likely still in the container. But the most obvious reason would be that it might be easier to not take them if not checking in luggage.

As far as water goes, once we dropped off our rental car, but I went to return the car but left the rest of our party at the terminal. There was a skycap and I asked if they wanted the water, and they gladly took it an placed it in a cabinet there. But that depends on the transportation options.

Yeah but you don't know anything about who left it. Like, would you use a soap or shampoo a stranger left behind? It's not hygienic. It would be better imo to throw that out.

Just curious - do you not use the shampoos and body washes in pump containers in hotel showers? I wouldn’t use someone else’s sunblock, but this got me thinking about those pumps…

I have never been in a hotel that has these instead of the little bottles, personally I wouldn't use them but at least those ones lock no? So only housekeeping can open and re-fill them? Seems slightly better that a random used sunscreen bottle.

I normally carry my own stuff tho, I have very sensitive skin so I can't use some soaps.

Many hotels have gone to refillable pumps for shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash because they are more environmentally friendly. I use them if I didn't pack my own because I wanted to travel light.
