Purchasing Water Bottles Onboard

I realize the water onboard is potable and safe, but I have a medical reason that I need to purchase and drink bottled water. We’re flying, so it is impractical to bring it along like we do when we drive to a port.

My question is, is there a price difference between ordering it ahead of time and having it delivered to your stateroom compared to making the purchase once onboard? Thanks for any help on this!

Thanks for taking the time to answer, but in the meantime I learned that since it is under “onboard gifts” it is not refundable, unless they cancel the cruise, so that’s not a risk I want to take. Current price is $55 for $24 and an 18% fee on top of that. It came to about $2.75 a pint if they don’t add tax on that.

I’ve had to do this before, and $40 seemed more like it, but it is heavy, and under the current circumstances, not surprised it has gone up. Thanks again!

The onboard water is so expensive. If you can carry it on it may be worth it. Also, my husband asked for distilled water for his CPAP and they provided it at no charge.

If OP can drink distilled water, this might be a good option for drinking water. It would at least get OP a free gallon to start and then OP could order more water if needed. I wouldn't feel bad requesting one, even if it is for non-CPAP use, since it is for medical reasons too. I drank some or ours in Europe when I realized I wouldn't need it all for CPAP, and the room host brought another for free when it was getting low. If he had asked, I would have told him not to, since it wasn't all for the CPAP.

I don't know if the bottles are the same on board, but we were told the only way to get the larger 24 back is ahead of time - that they only sell smaller packs onboard. I don't know if that is true. It's highway robbery, but we find it necessary to have enough water for excursions or when we are too exhausted/late at night to run up top to refill our water bottles.

You can fill water bottles in your room, no need to run to drink station. The water onboard is processed the same as bottled water - reverse osmosis and filtered. It's the same water used to prepare food, make ice cubes. It's quite good.

Not sure but when I checked the price before the cruise the bottled water case was $40 (this was a few weeks ago). I don't know if it was different if booked onboard. I just looked now and bottled water is now $55 for a 24-pack. I could of sworn it was only $40 a few weeks ago.

I never order it in advance but we did order a case once we boarded the Wonder last March for our WBPC crusie. I also recall it being around $40 which we bought many times, so I didn't even look at the price. Well, it was $55 + gratuity which made it almost $65. I contacted GS through the app to see if we were accidentally charged for something else too. They assured me that was the price for a case of water. I was so annoyed. Sure, it was my own fault for not asking the total before ordering. I wasn't asking them to remove it from our bill; I ordered it and I will pay for it. I was calm. I told them it was our 25th Disney cruise but I would never, ever buy another case of water onboard. Like the old saying, Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. They sent the Beverage Manager to talk to us during dinner one night. She agreed it is that price. I told her I expect to pay somewhat higher than grocery store pricing but that is absolutely highway robbery and we'll never buy it again. She sent a small gift of drink mugs to our cabin to soften the blow but I'd rather they adjust the price to something reasonable for everyone.

After our cruise, we bought an inexpensive, collapsible rolling carry on from Walmart that can easily hold a case of water and then some. I will be sure to buy a case before each cruise by any means necessary just to avoid buying their bottled/canned water. For me, it's more a matter of principle. I can't stand price gouging.

We always carry on a case of a water in a rolling carry on suitcase. We have to fly so if we have a rental car we will stop at a grocery store. If no rental car then we will use Instacart to have a case of water delivered to our hotel. We almost always fly with a rolling carry on bag if we are cruising so then we have it to repurpose for our water. You can easily fit a case of water in a standard carry on if you take it out of the packaging. I can sometimes fit more than a case. We also like a later PAT time so we don't have to carry the water for all that long once on board.

For a week long cruise I have sometimes need to buy more water on the ship but since it is usually late in the cruise I will do the six pack with the cooler. I realize you can buy this without the cooler but we tend to use those a lot at home so we never mind paying for this. Even with buying the cooler this works out to much less than the $55 DCL wants for the case of water.

Are you spending the night before your cruise some where? In the past when we left from PC we had an instacart delivery to the hotel with our water, wine, and individually wrapped snack for kids fishes and granola bars. We filled our rolling carry on with it. We plan on doing this again when we embark from Miami this summer. Also in Alaska we bought bottled water in the ports for way cheaper than onboard.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but I sure have read mixed things about drinking the ship water. The water at the beverage stations is going through a filter at the tap at least. The ones in your rooms are running through long lines through the ship, which I understand can create bacteria issues. I have read many recommendations here and elsewhere, that you really should be using it for brushing your teeth and washing, but not drinking. In fact, when my teen daughter ordered a glass of water from one of the bars with her group of friends, the bar tender told her, "next time, bring your own water, because our water isn't good to drink. It isn't clean." I assume their ice machines have filters too, like most ice machines. So honestly, I don't know, but prefer not to drink it with that uncertainty. Maybe I'll take a Brita filter cup or pitcher next time.

Edit: A quick Google search turns up results that overwhelming agree with you.

The bartender was wrong. Possibly he meant it doesn’t taste good (to him)? I’d be much more concerned he knowingly served non-potable water to a guest. But he didn’t. Every sink onboard would need to be labeled if that were true.

Once again, I TRULY appreciate the time everyone has taken to respond to this, I have been able to put everything together and figure out what I need to do in my case. Thank you all for your generosity and time.

Does anyone know how much it is for the 6 bottles once onboard.
we will be going straight from airport to ship so no time to pick up anything ahead of time?

I drink the water in the room. If it wasn’t safe I’d think there would be some signs telling you not to drink it. The cruise-lines don’t want people getting sick.

Yeah I don’t have a problem with that either, I was raised in the generation where we drank from the rusty garden hose. We just like to have a few bottles in case we go on shore we can bring them instead of hauling a big thermal cup (which I only use for my Coke, I don’t want the water to mess with that😁) so we thought we would buy the 6 pack for us & our friends. Then we can reuse the bottles on each shore visit.

A 6 pack is $15. 12 pack is $30. 24 is $60. On top of that you pay an 18% gratuity. Not cheap. It is Dasani in the metal cans. We ordered it for our Feb cruise and did not enjoy the taste at all. Of course, everyone is different so you may enjoy the taste.

The answer came from a different thread, posted in June.

We bring our own, reusable, bottles for water on excursions (filled from tap in room, and refrigerated in the fridge/cooler).

Cans of water, yuck. I wish we had more room to pack empty bottles but gotta squeeze in a lot into one suitcase but gonna fly back to Hawaii after cruise and spend a few days at Aulani.
probably just grab a few bottles at the airport.

You probably don't want to drink distilled water. I use it for my cpap because it doesn't have minerals and such in it. It's void of any minerals and nutrients found in regular water.
