Purchasing OTUP/Membership vs Contracts

Hello Disfriends!

I'm dumb, and I kind of need folks to explain some thing to me like I'm five. I'm wondering about OTU points as they relate to a resale contract.

DH and I purchased two GF contracts direct in 2022 with a February UY. We use all our points in both contracts every year, and I have always wound up purchasing a few OTU points to round out a reservation. I even bought MMB for 2026 because of the appeal of the bonus OTUPs. Like many fellow DVC folks, we have been suffering from a bad case of add-on-itis, and we just pulled the trigger on a resale contract at BWV with a March UY. We are in the early stages waiting for ROFR. But, if we ultimately pass ROFR and close on the BWV contract, does this mean we have two memberships because we will have two UYs? One membership for the GF two contracts and a separate membership for the BWV contract? I'm getting tripped up between contracts and memberships.

If I have this part correct, does this mean I have the ability to purchase OTUP separately for each membership? If so, what does that look like/how many OTUP can I purchase? And how frequently can I purchase them? Also, do I have to purchase a second MMB for my new contract? Gah! I'm confused.

Any info anyone has to set my spinning brain straight would be wonderful. TIA!

You will have 2 memberships, each use year will give you 1 membership. You can purchase 24 OTU points per membership so a total of 48. You can purchase them once a year. IIRC MMB is by member, however, your Boardwalk contract is resale so that membership is not DVC-Y regardless and should not qualify for MMB. You will end up buying BOGO OTU points using MMB on your GF membership and then full priced OTU points on your resale membership.

I would rescind that resale contract and look for something that’s in your same Feb UY.

Others have reported that they could buy on their resale contract on the MMB thread

Did you mention resale? Most of just stated they wanted to buy it for xx use year which was resale and they were letting them. I don’t have any first hand experience as I just have one use year but that was what many had reported over there
Hrmm I'll have to try it myself. I have a full resale and a full direct membership. I wonder if they'll let me buy 48 OTU points at BOGO then...? Seems too big of a loophole to be true.

Yes you will have 2 memberships.

An individual owner can not get more than one set of BOGO OTU points, regardless of how many memberships they own.

That is because MMB applies to the owner and we only get one set at a discounted price. We can still by a second set in the other membership, but we pay full price.

However, if each membership has more than one owner, and each owner buys MMB, then each person can get the BOGO OTU points as long as they each choose a different UY.

The key to getting MS to allow two MMB holders to get the deal on a resale memgerhsip is to simply not mention that word when calling to buy.

Just call and say you want to buy them in your X membership and you have MMB and want to use your BOGO benefit.

Then the other owner calls and does the same thing for the other membership.

@Little E , I want to reiterate that if you are not 100% clear and confident on the difference between Use Years, Memberships, Contracts, etc and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that having two separate Use Years/Memberships is unquestionably the right decision for you then IMO you should rescind the March BW contract during the cancellation window and find a Feb UY contract that meets your needs.

I have always wound up purchasing a few OTU points to round out a reservation.

Please, please, please rescind and get a matching Feb UY if you have any intention of using the add on BWV points with your VGF points.

I have 4 home resorts in one UY and the simplicity and seamlessness of using the points together at 7 months cannot be stressed enough. Having one single UY is the default answer for everyone unless you have a very, very specific use case.

For you folks with MMB, do you find yourself buying the BOGO regardless of whether you have points in a use year? (Meaning you would bank them instead if available)

You can't bank OTUP but it frees up your points that you can then bank which helps booking things at your home resort at the 11 month window.
Should have been more clear, yes, just wondering if financially whether MBB creates a "no brainer" situation to get more points cheaper. People are good on these forums at maximizing value :)

It makes sense for me. Even if I don't use anything else from MMB I end up paying $339 for 24 OTUP which frees up others that I can then use at highly competitive times.
$14.13 a point I can't rent from someone that cheap and get the 11 month window is the way I'm looking at it.
Even if they were in the 7 month window it's still a bargain to me as I can control when to use those points or where I want to use them for.

I do, 99+240=339. 339/24 = 14.125. Then add in that you can buy the points and membership with gift card and that brings the cost per point down further. I have plenty of points but I don't even think my direct points cost me less than 14 dollars per point. I use them on the summer trips, this year because we're WDW locals, we're using the points on passes.

With the renewal being 987 for cash per pass and 65 points per renewal.

987/65 = 15.18. 15.18>14.125. So it's worth it to buy the BOGO points. Currently keeping the cash means more to me than the points and it's nice to avoid having to rent them out and etc.

I had one of those "why am I not doing this sooner" moments when I was renewing the APs. I have photo pass on mine, and can get MBB, which comes with photo pass, for basically the same price. (The AP Photo pass will have photos be available for 1 year, where MBB I was 30 days). Unfortunately, I had renewed before MBB went on sale, but trying to plan for future years.

Thank you both!

BOGO OTUP with a DGC is a no brainer IMO if you can use the points or switch them out with a current 7m reservation. They also work at restricted resorts.
