Yes, at least on Delta. Last year my Mother treated us a trip to WDW, she tried to get us airline tickets and could not do it. The tickets had to be purchased by the people flying. It was an awesome present

be careful! I had this situation come up and was told by american and southwest that if the cardholder was not there at departure we would not be given our tickets. the cardholder can go and give positive id and then hand you your tix, but HAS to be present. That was for E tickets though. Maybe hard copies are different though. Get WRITTEN confirmation from some one before you do it Have fun!
I've never had that issue with southwest...purchased tics for both my mom and grandmother to go visit family in Florida....online as well. They showed up for their flight and never had a problem that I had purchased them on my CC and was not traveling with them. Weird...maybe it has to do with the airport you use?
I have been purchasing online for others for years with my CC. My MIL lives in Florida and I in Mass. She has never had a problem boarding. I even bought tickets for my sister and 5 of her friends on my CC and they didn't have a problem either. I have used different airlines, Delta included.
Never had a problem doing it either (Delta, UsAir, Southwest, etc). And I use the e-tickets, but I print the boarding passes before I ever get to the airport.

This is one reason I highly recommend e-tickets and not waiting to pick-up tickets at the airport.
I once bought a ticket for my mom using one of the special weekend air fares that come out all the time. Since it was a special deal through the airline made at the last minute, they said they would require her to show the credit card which purchased the ticket when she checked in and got her tickets. Since I don't live in the same state, this was not feasible. We spoke to 5 different customer service reps and they all said she would need to have my credit card when checking in. She went to the airport with a signed fax from me including a copy of the credit card just in case, and was never asked to see anything other than her photo ID.
I tried this with Delta a few years ago, and with Northwest just a couple of months ago and neither site let me book travel online because I was not the cardholder, nor were any of the passengers. There was actually a note about it on the site on the page to enter the CC information in.
