Purchasing 200 points

We're toying with the idea of buying 200 pts as we get into DVC -- 150 of those points will be at SSR and financed through Disney. Should the other 50 be at another resort (like VWL -- we like it alot) and purchased resale or should we just pick up another 50 at SSR and lump it in with the rest? Are we able to buy the 50 points at another resort through Disney too? What is the downside of combining the pts into 1 contract? What does the 50 points at another resort buy me? I know I've seen the answers to these on the forum somewhere, but I haven't been able to easily find it when I've searched.

Thanks for the help. pirate:

50 points at another resort will buy you the 11 month window at that resort for those 50 points. If you bank and borrow and travel once every three years on those points you will have as many as 150 at a time. Quite a few people do just that. You may be able to buy the other points through Disney but will most likely go onto a waitlist.

Personally, I find this to be a hassle for me. I own 200 and another 50 at Vero. When I am booking at the 11 month window, I am always short a few points. I booked HH and had to make a cash reservation for our last night. Then I had to call on that particular day to switch to points, however, there is always the possiblity that it will not be available.

If I had to do it all over again, I would go with one resort. I bought the extra 50 vero when they were running a promo to sell it out. I wish I would of paid a little extra and bought 50 more at HH...considering I will never stay at Vero, they seem useless to me.

Just my thoughts,

Kim

I will repeat the wisdom for which I wish I had known PRIOR to our first DVC purchase -

BUY WERE YOU WANT TO STAY

If that is VWL - then buy VWL - there are resales in many places - including the sponser of this forum the Timeshare Store -

also *********** - I cant' seem to create a link to this but if you enter the name into the web address it will find it

TUG(timeshare users group) has a classified section
http://www.tug1.org/tugads/adshome.php3

I have seen resales on EBAY too.

If you go resale and go through TUG which in general bypassess a broker inturn saviing the seller commission cost which in turn sometimes can mean lower price per point PLEASE USE A RESALE CLOSING COMPANY

or

or

I have read good things about the above three throughvarious sites including TUG

200 points is a good amount, we have 170 and I wish we had around 220. That would be good for us, and not toooooo much due (more point =more dues.)

I would get them all at the same resort, same contract. That will be easier to keep track off. Really 50 points at another resort isn't going to help you too much. This way you can use them all together at what ever resort you decied to stay at.

Thanks for the quick responses. We'd like to move on this this next week. So your input and perspective is greatly appreciated. We actually like both SSR and VWL so putting all 200 points at SSR is no problem for us. pirate:

I think this is a good decision. From my point of view, I like to have enough points to do what I want every year. If I have only 50 points somewhere, and it goes to 150 every three years, it buys me very little for a big hassle. May as well just get a hotel room at this level of points. JMHO

I had considered the same thing. I ended up buying where I wanted to stay most, the VWL.

I bought a 200 pt resale at $76 per. I then did an add-on directly with Disney for 37 (that was what they had in my UY and I decided to take the whole 37).

End of the day, the resale was less than had I bought SSR even with the incentive.

If you ever need to sell your points it seems like the smaller contracts move pretty quickly when they are listed on the reseller sites. Therefore it may not be a bad idea to split it up 150 and 50, especially since Disney doesn't charge any closing costs.
