Well.....the price of resales lately is really getting to me. It is going to be time soon to pull the trigger and purchase a piece of the mouse.

I plan to puchase around 300 points.

My question:
Would you purchase one 300 contract or two 150 contracts at differnet resorts? Any pros or cons???

My suggestion would be to buy two smaller contracts. It would allow you the flexiblity to sell one of them later on if you need to. You would pay more in closing costs to do it this way, but in the long run, it might work out better.

You would also be able to buy at 2 different resorts if that is of interest to you.

One of the reasons to do two smaller contracts is if you have more than one heir who would be interested in having the points at some (far away, hopefully) future date. You will want to figure out which Use Year(s) will work for you (and all the other advice about whether buying into DVC is right for you).

If you need the 11-month booking advantage for all 300 points, and don't have resale or inheritance issues, one larger contract might be better. There are pros and cons to both approaches -- several variables to consider.

We couldn't make up our mind over BCV and VWL, so we bought 150 of both. Couldn't be happier and also added another 200 of BCV.

If I were buying, regardless of whether I purchased at the same resort or not, I would buy 3-100 point contracts or 2-150 point contracts. The smaller the contract, the more flexibility you have as an owner (to sell pieces parts off later) and the more you'll get from a resale perspective. Many people just don't have the money to buy a 300 point contract.

As for different resorts, here are my thoughts:
* Can you book 8 - 11 months out? If so, a home resort advantage will mean something to you. Anywhere you own points, you can book 8 - 11 months out with those points (and only those points).
* Where do you want to stay? Do you see yourself staying at one or two resorts most of the time? If so, buy at those. If not, then it really doesn't matter. Go for the best deal (whether that's lower price per point, longer contract term, lower maintenance fees, etc.).

If you do purchase 2 or 3 contracts, try and get the same UY, and make sure they all go under the same member id when going to Disney. If they are the same at the same resort, it is like owning a 300 point contract. You just call and make the reservation. If you purchase at different resorts, you won't be able to combine until the 7 month window. But at 7 months, it will be like one 300 point contract.

If you purchase separate UYs, you can reserve 2 days with one contract and 3 days with another, but if you find you are short 4 points for one night, the only way to cover that is to transfer from one contract to another. You are only allowed one transfer in or out of a member id once per UY.

We purchased 2 separate contracts through GMAC, and we weren't owners yet. GMAC asked when they sent them off that they be placed under the same member id, and that has worked out great. Fortunately, GMAC knew to do that, because I sure didn't.

Lastly, have fun picking a home resort, and congratulations on your upcoming purchase!!! :thumbsup2

we bought two smaller 160 points each both at animal kingdom. we need a two bedroom most of the time and to book 11 months out need points for the same location.

I would definitely buy two smaller contracts and depends on if you need one or two bedroom. If you usually need two bedroom I would get both at same location because 150 points won't get you much time for a two bedroom at the 11 month window. If you usually do one bedroom I would probably do two seperate locations to give you more options at the 11 month window.

With 300 points, you could split it into 2-150 point contracts at two different resorts and enjoy the 11-month booking window every year with all 300 points.

EXAMPLE: 150 points at AKV and 150 points at BLT

Year 1: BANK 150 BLT points and BORROW 150 AKV points...book 11 months in advance with 300 AKV points.

Year 2: Use 300 BLT points to make a reservation at 11 month window.

Year 3: Repeat Year 1 or Bank 150 AKV points and Borrow 150 BLT points and make a 300 point reservation at 11 months for BLT...

...you get the idea...

You can still use all 300 points every year and maintain the home resort advantage for both resorts. You always have the option of combining them at the 7 month mark too.

Good Luck!

I would buy one 160 point contract and then two 50 point and one 40 point contracts. I think I will prefer to stay at BLT, so I would only buy there.

Why???? Would you do high-point cost add-ons through Disney with no extra closing costs (and ask for the same UY -- or pay the addt'l closing costs for 3 more contracts (instead of one or two)?
(Or was that tongue-in-cheek?).

Since I am only interested in BLT, the add-ons would be there. With those, I prefer smaller contracts so that they would be more attractive on the resale market.

I would definitely do two smaller contracts, too! :goodvibes That is what we did!Works well now and in the future, hopefully!
