Puppy chewing wrecking my budget!

Agree with Crating-absolutely parmamount for the dogs safety and your sanity. Kongs,Nylabone, and rope floss bones are great-as are raw marrow bones-DO NOT ever give your puppy rawhide or pigs ears-both can cause intestinal obstructions resulting in expensvie surgury at best and death at worst. We have a six month old Bernese Mountain Dog-he has Nylabones and rope bones and is never left unsupervised in the house-the only thing he has destroyed is an old kitchen rug.

Crate training-put the dog in a crate when you cannot supervise him. Also wear him out with a dog park or long walks.

You don't just put him in a crate and walk away. Proper crate training takes time while you are home to introduce the pup to the crate and make sure he won't freak out in it. Some dogs do not do well in crates and will cause themselves more damage.

My pup has high anxiety in her crate so we can't use it for long periods. We can put her in it at night in our room to keep her from roaming at night but during the day if we are gone she will chew at the crate and everything in it and cry and cry no matter how many endless of hours we put into it. Let her sleep on the couch and she'll stay there for days alone with no noise, anxiety, or chewing. Vet and dog trainer says it probably has something to do with her life before we rescued her so if she isn't hiring anything let her roam when we aren't there.

we had the same problems with our beagle mix, she would cry all day in the crate (my neighbors would complain) and she would chew at it and anything in it. I was stubborn and kept at it a while but then let her roam the house with my lab mix and she was fine. Our lab has since passed and we adopted a Boxer mix. I did not bother with another expensive crate. he is kept behind a baby gate in a hallway for now but expect we will let him roam after this puppy chewing stage. I have given him those "busy bones". no one has mentioned I hope that is ok. He is going to the vet for some more immunizations (he is 12 weeks) so I will ask then. We tried Kong with the Beagle mix and she wasn't interested so I hadn't purchased any for him but I may give it a try and may try the nylabone too. When we are home we do not leave him unattended unless they are in the secure backyard. He loves going out there and chasing the cat and my Beagle Mix.

put the dog in a crate when you cannot supervise him

He is constantly supervised so all this chewing is happening in front on my eyes! I grab him and substitute a toy each time so I'm hoping he will learn sooner rather than later.

+1 for the Elk Antlers

Are these safe? How about knuckle bones??

He may be bored or teething.

Get him several good hard rawhide bone so he can chew. Then play him pretty hard in the backyard. Balls, sticks, toys, chase. If you see him chewing on something he shouldn't hand him the rawhide. Have these all over so he knows his option.

Get a Kong and stuff it with treats. I use peanut butter, kibble, more peanut butter, then stuff the opening with a biscuit. She works on it for hours!

This worked perfectly for both our german shepherd mix, and for our pug chihuahua mix, too. Usually takes them a long time to work out the treat, especially if it was a smaller one or multiple small ones wedged in there!

:thumbsup2 A puppy who is chewing should not be left unsupervised at all. When we got ours, she was crated when we weren't in the room until I was confident she would get into any trouble. Now, every now and then, she will steal a tissue out of the garbage can, or play with a sock...

We had a Newfoundland and he ate out couch! I tried everything - bitter apple; sound sensors; cayenne pepper... I finally talked to a trainer who suggested plain old Listerine (the nasty yellow stuff - who likes that?). Worked like a charm. Although my house did smell a little medicinal. I soaked his leash in it so he wouldn't chew that and used it on the wood trim around the door.

Another great training aid - lemon juice. Those little lemon shaped bottles at the grocery store are the best training aid for barking; biting; jumping - whatever. I use it when our Leonberger puppy gets into things that aren't his (my youngest sons Ugg boots. He took one and I squirted the lemon juice in his mouth and said 'not yours' and it only took two times for him to get the message). I also use it at the dinner table or when he wanted to get on our couch. Now I only need to show him the bottle and he backs away. I love lemon juice!

Peanut butter Kong toys are awesome for bored puppies. Good luck!

Absolutely crate train and no rawhide or pig ears!
