Pumpers - disconnecting for rides ??

Since the last pumping thread got so much traffic I thought I'd throw my question out there too.:)

This trip will be our first since Liam started pumping. I know I've read that he should disconnect for RnRC because of the magnetic launch, but are there other rides where he will need to disconnect??? Thanks.

Actually you don't even need to disconnect on RNRC. My wife and daughter never disconnect unless their blood sugar goes low. The rides don't interfere with the pump at all.

I have to look at my daughters animas book but I think there are certain rides and free falls that youare supposed to disconnect for.

The Animas rep I talked to said that you should disconnect from Tower of Terror. I don't see why you would have to disconnect and not take it on the ride. However, who am I supposed to leave it with? It's usually just my husband and I going so leaving it with someone isn't an option..... I figure I'll try the rides out once I get my pump and see if anything goes funky.

If you are carrying a tote bag, shoulder bag, or a bag of any type, ToT has a place to stow that bag without you needing to hand it off. I don't see why you couldn't put it in your bag before you stow it.

I thought the danger was in the pump falling off from the force of the take-offs or drops, not necessarily a magnetic issue. But I could be wrong--it's happened once or twice before.;)

I believe in the animas book it talks about rides with a magnetic field. You have to disconnect so that it doesn't accidentally send a bunch of false info to the pump and do one big bolus I THINK! I will ask my daughter.

Yes, the pump manufacturers do suggest you take it off for rides like TOT and big roller coasters. That being said my DDs medtronic has been on Tot about 30 times and many other rides as well with no problems. We do take it off on any water rides and put it in a ziploc bag. We did ask our nurse educator about the pump before we went and they said it would have to be ALOT of rides in a very short period of time.

I thought the whole idea was not wanting it to be on the ride at all. Not really the fact that you're wearing it. Whether it's on you or not and in the stow away place it doesn't matter. Could be wrong though!

I guess I'll just have to try it out and see what happens!

So all this talk about pumps got me to wondering...which rides have a magnetic field?

My 16 year old son wears a pump and didn't take it off for any of the rides. He does make sure it is in his pocket rather then clipped on his waistband for any type of roller coaster or thrill ride where it could fall off. I did suggest he take it off for those ride but being 16 he knows much more then I do and didn't take it off. Fortunately he was fine no damage done.

I would recommend Skin Tac Wipes to help with adhesion of his infusion set in the hot and humid Florida weather. Even with all the swimming and sweating his infusion set stays on when I use the Skin Tac.

I'm sure you'll bring a back up of syringes just in case anything goes wrong with the pump. But the one time our pump broke Minimed shipped us one immediately and we had it within 24 hours.

I"ve had my pump for 10 years now, and I have never taken my pump off for any rides. Four trips to WDW, one to IOA, and countless Disneyland trips not a single problem. The only time I do disconnect is when we go to BB. Just make sure it is clipped securely. Have Fun!

This is great advice.. the Skin Tac is wonderful!
And always bring supplies even if you think you will never ever need them. We have had meters break, insulin freeze, a bottle of strips dropped in a puddle.. you name it and we have dealt with it. We always bring syringes in case something happens to the pump. Thankfully it never has...
