Just wanted to thank you all and update - we bought the pool and it is being installed next week. 
We went with an 18ft above ground pool and bought the 5X13ft resin deck to go with it as well as the "cascading stairs" 
that my mother (who doesn't swim) can sit on and maybe the dog, lol. I think you were all right on.
