Pulling rooms out of cash inventory...

Still relatively new to the DVC process...I called down in July to see about booking a last minute 3 night trip for my parents. Obviously, there were no studios on short notice, but the CM said that they could pull a room out of their cash inventory for us and transfer it to their DVC inventory and allow us to use our points. I wasn't aware they could do this, but I kept my mouth shut.

I called this morning because we need to bump our October trip up a day and of course the night we need isnt available. When I asked about pulling the room from cash inventory, I was told that there was no way that this can be done and we should have never been told that in July.

Just wondering if any CM's have brought this option up with anyone else.

It happens, once in a great while, but not often and it's not something that should be expected. I know once that they probably pulled a cash room out for my last minute ressie but the CM didn't actually say she was doing that...she was just gone for a loooong time during the phone call.

Needless to say, you were really lucky it happened for you!!!

Thats what I thought and figured, I just wanted to make sure that this was something that happened frequently. I realize that our late change of plans is our problem and it DVC can help, great! If not, we will figure it out.

It comes down to why the room was available for cash as to if it can be pulled back for a points reservation.

If the room was unreserved at 60 days from check-in, it can turned over to CRO to rent for cash. It's possible for DVC to pull these rooms back to reserve on points. They need to contact CRO first.

If the room was turned over to CRO to rent for cash because a member exchanged out of DVC it can not be returned to DVC to reserve on points.

We pleaded for them to do that for July 4th.
We had four nights on points, two before and two after.
We had just added on and were using new points.
It was even my Birthday and we couldn't get them to do it.
Waited until the last minute and paid the cash.

BUT when we were actually at the resort in December and
needed to stay an extra night on December 20th because our flight home was canceled
and MS said there were NO room available they did pull a room for us
and we were able to stay on points.

So it can be done but they don't often do it.
There is a lot of things MS can do if you get the right person..

This is starting to become very clear to me...

No one knows the exact process or reasoning this happens. I am sure there is more complicated process then it just being available. As mentioned, if it was DVC inventory turned over at 60 days I am sure this is the easiest situation that they can pull it back. It also seems that maybe occupancy rates and time of year come into play. If there is only one room left, I doubt they pull it back, but if say its within a couple weeks and there are multiple rooms left, the odds of renting these cash are pretty rare.

I have never heard of them pulling a room back more then 60 days out and don't believe they can do it. The closer it is to the actual date needed, it seems the more likely they will do it.

Breakage CRO DVC rooms can be pulled back, some at MS do it as a matter of course, some you have to ask. It takes extra time for them to check and if availble bring them back in.

I just called to change our November plans to go from a studio to a 1BR at SSR, since having the washer/dryer would be nice. But it is just past the 60 day mark so I guess rooms went to CRO. They had 5 of the 6 nights available with one night missing in the middle.

Should I call back again and see if they can pull that one night back to points?

The person that I spoke with didn't seem the slightest bit interested in even checking inventory for me to begin with. Usually when I get someone like that, I call back the next day and take my chances with someone else.

Both erionm and bookwormde are right. The DVC sends to CRO any rooms that have not been booked by the 60 day mark. Then whoever wants it first gets it, whether it's a DVC using points or a cash guest.

Remember cancellations occur all of the time, so if a DVC member cancels in the 60 day period, that villa may go over to CRO for possible booking (unless a wait list picks it up). But those rooms can still be called back if a DVC member wants to use points for a reservation. The early bird gets the villa at that point.

Keep in mind those villas are sent to CRO to make sure the villa is booked, unbooked villas can mean higher annual dues.

It wouldn't hurt to call and ask, but keep in mind that breakage inventory (unreserved at the 60 day mark) is not always available, especially for the more popular times of the year. There may not be any to pull back.

Are you on the waitlist for that one night? Hope so. Good luck!

I agree, October has been pretty much soldout for points for some time and many people are on waitlists. I doubt there was breakage inventory sent to CRO.

Do you know if MS can also do this with Developer's inventory ?

:)

I didn't want to risk having to move so yesterday I just kept our studio reservation at VWL. As I mentioned the person I spoke to yesterday didn't seem interested in even checking availability for me.

I called this morning and got a wonderful cast member who booked us for a 1 BR Standard View at Kidani. My kids are going to be so excited since this is one of their favorite resorts. I decided to put in a waitlist for a Savanna view just in case, but boy am I thrilled right now.

Lesson learned for me. Call back occasionally. You may really just luck out. Perhaps someone just canceled, because the gentleman I spoke with did not put me on hold. He booked the reservation super fast, so I guess my timing was right on, for a change.

That's great!

Don't worry if your waitlist for a savanna view doesn't come through. There are plenty of public viewing spots.

The kids will have a great time. :)

:thumbsup2Congrats on the room. DH and I are staying in a stadard 1 bdrm for the first 3 nights of our upcoming trip. I would have liked a savanna view room, but I do like the savings in points! As Carol said, lots of public viewing spots.

I have not heard specifically how they handle DVD owned points (or traded in points) I would guess that they might not be as readily availabe until they are pretty sure they can not turn them into cash. Close in when they are pretty sure they are going to be empty you would think they would "trade them off" for other more saleable points and release them for DVC reservations.

I agree...We had sv view on our last stay, but we had a better view of animals right outside community room. they have a feeder for giraffe's right outside window. kids loved it

Thanks for your reply :)

Developer "inventory" is not owned by members so can't be used by members. There is the one exception that this is where rooms appear when you've just purchased and your guide makes something happen, but that's a sales thing.
