Any other Disers with a puggle?
I just wanted to hear more about this type of dog.

DH was down the street scoping out a yardsale, while I was at my friends running a yardsale with her.
He called to say "hey there's this dog down here tied to a tree that looks like Thumper (our beloved and much missed first dog) and it has a sign that says FREE. Do you want to have a look?"

Well, if the dog is anything like Thumper............yes!
So he brings the dog down for me to see and he is adorable and sweet and well behaved and we both fall in love with him.

DH took him back to get more info from the guy trying to find him a new home.
The dog was raised with cats and gets along with them. Has been thru obedience training, is house and crate trained. One year old and a Pug/Beagle mix. Vet papers and vax (he goes to the same vet we use which is military vet.)

We decided to bring him home.

I have since read all the horrible things on the internet about cross breeds and how people who own them are terrible and irresponsible pet owners.
Don't really care to hear that here, I really just want to hear from other puggle owners and their experiences.

Thanks

I don't have one so I have no words of wisdom. Puggles are so cute though! My BF and I really want to get one. I hope someone out there has one :)

Well, no one when I was growing up had pure breads, everyone had mutts, which is about the same thing. I don't know what is wrong with a crossbred. My BIL got a Puggle that is now about 6 months old or so and he is a good dog so far. They have a Jack Russell and 2 kids and he has been great with them. Our dog loves to play with her Puggle cousin.

Mutts are great and all started out as crossbreeds. Depending on the mix, they can be great dogs. Most of it depends on the upbringing. Don't have a mix, though your puggle sounds cute. Any pics? :)

I don't have one, but I had a beagle growing up and I still love beagles to this day. I would love to see a pic too.

I think the criticism against them is not about owning them, but about breeding them.........just because there are so many dogs out there already, and so many people (just like this guy you got your baby from) get them and then don't want them, so more unwanted dogs.

I don't think anyone would criticize you giving a home to this unwanted baby!

Why did the family give him up? Did they say?

A mixed breed is hit and miss - there is no way that another pug/beagle owner can tell you if yours will be a great dog or not. Since they aren't a breed, their temperment, apperance, lifespan, and health issues can be hit or miss depending upon how the genetics played out. You may be able to research pugs and beagles and try to get a good idea of what issues you may encounter.

Good for you for giving that pup a loving home! It breaks my heart that people would just give away a family member like that =( I hope he ends up being a great member of your family for many years ;)

Thank you everyone for being so positive and supportive. Since I started researching this type of dog yesterday, I have read many nasty, nasty threads on other (dog-related) sites calling them worthless, mutts, and damning the owners. People can just be so mean.

So far, so good. He is just a really well tempered, well behaved, playful dog. Perfect for my two kids.
The cats are still adjusting, but once he was in his crate for the night they came out and were fine. I think the oldest, Mikey, will adjust quickly. It will take Tigerlily and Tinkerbell a while longer because they are naturally less social.

It is kind of funny, because when DH and I first moved in together someone dumped a dog in our backyard....that dog was the Thumper referred to in my original post. An absolute sweetie of a dog. She was our baby! (She was hit and killed by a car while staying with some friends of ours). Anyways, looking back at our pictures we think now she was the same mix. We always called her a mutt, weren't sure what she was breedwise. But she and Copper look so much alike!
I told DH that this was fate bringing our Thumper back to us. It was meant to be. DH wasn't even supposed to be here this weekend, he was sent home on medical leave from First Sergeant school in SC!
If he hadn't been sent home, he wouldn't have helped me set up my table at the yardsale. And my friends husband wouldn't have been able to ask for a ride to look at other yardsales. And DH wouldn't have been there to see Copper tied up to a tree.
Rattling on, I know. But that is how I feel.

The guy that my dh talked to was a single sailor living in barracks and could no longer keep the dog. He had been keeping it with friends (the family whose house he was at) but they didn't want to keep the dog. So he decided it was best to try and find a family for him. Didn't want him to go to the shelter, although I will say the shelter here is very good and a no kill shelter. We adopted our three cats from there.
Anyways, he had all the vet info for us, the crate and food. And he told DH if we decided not to keep him to bring him back, he would rather keep looking for a home than send him to the shelter.
We also know that military dumping pets is a real problem............they get dumped a lot because of moves, can't have them in barracks, etc. Very sad.

Awwww, such a cutie-pie! I'll admit, since I am a "show dog person" I don't believe in the intentional breeding of "mutts". In fact, I have never even seen a "puggle" before.

With that being said: ~~~ YOU SHOULD BE COMMENDED FOR SAVING THIS DOG! I think it's a great thing that you guys did. It really was meant to be! You are part of the solution to the over-crowding problem. You have done your part over and over by adopting from shelters and by now adopting Copper. So don't feel bad at all!

Copper is really cute and seems very well trained. It's great that this turned out for you all!

he looks like a pudgy puggle! :rotfl2:

very cute! :)

What a handsome little guy! I think he's actually smiling in that first pic. I hope you have many happy years with Copper. :sunny:

We had a pug/fox terrier mix named...COOPER. He was the BEST dog ever. We were heart broken when he was killed (a car jumped the curb while he was on a leash and came up on to the sidewalk and killed him...nearly missing my dh, they never even stopped :( ). At first we were too heart broken to even consider getting another dog, but after about a year we started looking and we still are looking for another pug mix. I don't think that anything is wrong with a "mixed breed". YES, some breeders are horrid...but that applies to breeders who raise pure breds too. In all situations, you will find good ones and you will find bad ones. The only caution is that they are turly one of a kind dogs...finding another one "like" them can become a truly heartbreaking task.

You did a wonderful thing by providing a home to a puggle in need! :) I am so glad that you found him and he found you guys! What fun for you all!

The pug on the left in my signature is the original "Puggles." We named her when she was 3 months old. She'll be 11 in December.

I hope Copper is everything that you want and need in a dog. I don't get frosted over mutts. I get frosted over people breeding mutts and charging big $$$ for them.

The bright side of having a mutt, puggle, is that they tend to not have the breed specific problems that the pure bred dogs have. They are very cute, though, and Copper is just plain beautiful!

I was thinking the same thing..........I have known many a mutt that were and are wonderful pets, usually smarter too. It's more like when people keep interbreeding the purebreds where you run into genetic problems etc.
