This is my first time posting here. I used to spend a decent amount of time at another message board site, but over the last few years, it's become a much different place, and not one that's all that much fun. Therefore, I thought I'd give this site a try, and I'm liking what I'm seeing so far! I actually found these boards because I was looking for a review of the Paint the Night Dinner package, but now I'm getting a little ahead of myself. Let's take a step back for some introductions:

My name is Tiffany (the guy on the left will be mentioned later). I'm a high school teacher from Southern Oregon who goes to Disneyland way more than your typical high school teacher from Southern Oregon. When I was growing up, my mom's family lived about half an hour from the parks, so when we made our annual trip to visit the family, we often spent a day there. Once I got to be a grownup, I started going with friends or family members much more often and staying longer. Now, I try to get down to Anaheim at least once a year (although twice is really the goal!)

Almost two years ago, Ben came into the picture. He's a sportswriter who's originally from Texas, and it's actually due to the meddling of some of my dear students that this relationship exists. His only Disney experience up 'til now is from last June, when this picture was taken. Along with several other chaperones, we took a group of my Leadership students down to Disneyland for an end-of-the-year celebration trip (see picture below).

While we had a (mostly) great trip, our time was, naturally, not our own. We checked in with the kids every three hours, which meant we spent quite a bit of time sitting and waiting for them all to show up. I had to spend a bit more time than I'd like tracking down lost tickets and wayward children (they were almost completely great, just a little high maintenance), which meant we didn't get to go on all the rides (he didn't even get to do Indy or Soarin'!). Also, a visit to Trader Sam's was out of the question, as were midday naps, since we stayed at an adequate but significantly offsite hotel. We were in the parks for two days and had a lot of fun, but I was a little bummed about how much he missed. We had a trip planned for August, but because of other commitments, he wasn't able to go (my parents, brother, sister-in-law, niece, and I went, but missed him).

Speaking of my parents, this is them waiting for California Screamin':
MumampDad.jpg

They've been married almost 36 years. Dad retired from juvenile corrections a couple of years ago, and Mum is a public health nurse. Since his retirement, Dad and I have taken a couple of trips down to Anaheim in addition to our family excursions. As of last summer's trip, we're all (except Ben) Annual Passholders, which might seem a little strange considering our (lack of) proximity to Anaheim, but with that trip lasting five days and with the knowledge that we'd surely be visiting again within a year's time, it actually made good economic sense to take the plunge.

So, now that we've been properly introduced, I suppose the next thing to do is discuss the real reason we're all here: our March trip to Disneyland!

About a month ago, Ben and I were hanging out on a Sunday evening. Out of the blue, he turned to me and asked, "So...do you want to go to Disneyland for Spring Break?"

To put it lightly, I was shocked. Flabbergasted. Speechless. Delighted, naturally, but since we hadn't even been discussing a trip as a possibility, I think it took me about a minute to squeak out any words. This is atypical. Normally, the words and I get along famously, but in this situation, they failed me. Finally, I was able to manage, "Are you serious?" He replied in the affirmative, and we began discussing possibilities.

A little note about the two of us: I am a planner. He is, to put it lightly, not. I delight in lists and itineraries and packing a week ahead of time. He is a huge fan of spontaneity, unexpected adventures, and throwing a change of clothes in a bag a few minutes before heading out the door. Even though we've been together for almost two years now, I think he was a little unprepared for the barrage of questions I sent his way: "When do you want to go? Where do you want to stay? What do you want to do? Are you sure about this?" and so on. And finally, after a discussion of the financial side, "What do you think about asking my parents to go along and split the cost of the hotel?" He said that would be fine, so the next morning, I made some very excited phone calls. Within half an hour, they had agreed and Dad and I were on the travel sites trying to find decent prices for flights.

Since Ben and I both have work schedules that revolve around the high school, Spring Break was really the only time we could make the trip work. Flight prices, therefore, were a bit elevated from what we'd like to spend, but not terrible. Our departing flight is a very early one on Delta, and our return trip is with United (and as late as makes any sense). This will give us two half days and two full days in the Parks. We expect crowds, but Dad and I were there a couple years ago just after New Year's and still had a great time, so we're not too worried about it.

Our original plan was to stay at the Paradise Pier Hotel. While some aren't huge fans, we've stayed there a number of times and enjoyed it immensely. We've also stayed at the Grand Californian a few times and it will always be our first choice, but we figured we'd better go the slightly more economical route. I received a discount code that brought the prices much closer together, but I was still planning on being somewhat financially responsible until I called Disney reservations and was informed that they didn't have any more standard rooms at the Paradise Pier, and anything they had available would actually be more expensive than the GCH with the discount! At that point, I happily picked the upgrade. I informed Mum and Dad of the change in plans, and they had basically the same reaction I did: yay! Ben, having only stayed off site, nodded and mumbled "mmhmm" with a much less excited demeanor, but we'll forgive him his lack of experience.

For the last several trips, we've done the World of Color dining package at the Carthay Circle Restaurant. This time, we decided we'd still like to eat there because we enjoy the food, the ambiance, and excellent waitstaff (and Ben has never experienced it), but we'll be getting WOC Fastpasses because we're staying at the hotel, so we're just having dinner there Monday night. Additionally, we've made reservations for the Blue Bayou Paint the Night package (partially based on positive reviews I saw here) on Wednesday. In June, Ben and I caught a bit of the parade, but not from a great vantage point, and watched the fireworks from the Rivers of America after Fantasmic! In August, the family caught the parade from a decent vantage point just past the photography store (toward Tomorrowland) and enjoyed the view of the fireworks over the castle, but we were a bit far forward to see the Main Street projections. Also, I'm not the tallest kid on the block, so my view of the parade was mostly between the shoulders of the giants in front of me. This time around, I'm excited to get the full experience!

Most importantly, I'm looking forward to giving Ben the full Disney experience. He enjoyed himself last time and was a GREAT sport about following me around and dealing with all the responsibilities that come with supervising 30 teenagers, but he doesn't quite get the Disney magic yet. This time around, we're going to try to do just about everything, and I can't wait to treat him to all the magic Disneyland can provide!

sounds like a great trip and sometimes those unexpected trips are great!

I wish they had the paint the night package when we went. We still had a decent view but would have loved to have a reserved spot!

Well, this seems fun. I think I'll follow along.

I'm delighted to hear it!

I'm pretty excited for the trip in general and for the package specifically. I'm a huge fan of this particular fireworks show, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it from the middle of the street.

Two weeks to go...everything's reserved/purchased except the shuttle from the airport to the hotel, which we'll do a couple of days before leaving. I may or may not already be about 60% packed...

Love lists! Love 'em. Happy planning and packing and unpacking and repacking and lots and lots of happy lists!

As I mentioned previously, The Boyfriend's only previous Disney experience was our trip with my high school students, and he missed out on a lot. Until a conversation we had last night, I really didn't realize how MUCH he missed! I had the Disneyland app open and asked which rides he most wanted to go on. As we scrolled around, it got more and more ridiculous: on the last trip, we didn't do anything in Fantasyland (corralling the children in the morning was kind of ridiculous, so we weren't there at opening either day, and the lines got too long to wait in the rest of the day), didn't go on the Matterhorn (wasn't very long after the reopening, so the lines were crazy long), didn't even go into ToonTown (not a huge loss as far as rides are concerned, but there are fun things to look at and he might like Roger Rabbit), no Tiki Room, NO DOLE WHIP, and, as previously mentioned, no Indy or Soarin'. Poor guy has barely scratched the surface! We're going to leave this trip exhausted, because we have a lot to make up for!

24 hours to go! I woke up about every half hour last night, because apparently my subconscious REALLY wanted to get checked in for our flight! Now that that's done, maybe I can actually get some sleep so that I don't arrive at the parks looking like a very happy zombie...
