I have always said I am not a believer when it comes to psychics or mediums. I think that most people read into things and convince themselves that the psychic is honing in on something personal, or may give too much away that the psychic picks up on etc.

However, at the urging of some friends, I had a “session” with a psychic/medium that they “swear by” and I have to say that I’ve changed my mind a little bit.

Sure – he said some generic things that probably everybody could say relates to their lives - but he did hit on a few very specific things that I feel he would have had no way of knowing.

Has anybody here ever been to a psychic/medium who they felt was truly legitimate?

Just curious? :confused3

I have never had a reading but I was recently with a friend who had one. She's about 10 years younger than I am and the first thing the medium said was, "So this is your mom?" Strike one!! And it went downhill from there. :rolleyes1

I will say that years ago I was with a friend who paid $10 to have her palm read at a local craft fair. I was shocked by what she told her - named her sister by name and gave some VERY specific information that my friend thought wasn't true, but it turned out that it was. She also told her that she'd have two children, a boy and then a girl, so close in age that they might as well be twins. Years later, that's exactly what happened. She also said they would both have hair so light that it would almost look white. That is also true (and my friend is a brunette). In fact, EVERYthing she was told was either true or came true later. Weird!!! :confused3

I don't believe in them but I do believe they can get some things dead-on right.

I went to ChinaTown ages ago with my friend when she was in town. She had two kids (boys) at the time. We had our palms read by the spooky old lady.

My friend was told that she would marry again (she wasn't divorced at the time) and have four boys, and would have a great job, etc..

Within a few years, it all came true. She ended up with twin boys right at her divorce. She is married again and happily so. We still are amazed how well the palm-reader did, but not one thing she said about me was correct.

I would want to know what the specific things were and how easy it would have been to logically guess and "hit" on them. Or how he had been able to research and find out information.

I think all mediums and psychics are bogus, personally. I don't believe any of it for a minute.

See, that's the thing. She made some guesses about your friend. None of it was real. She didn't "know" your friend would divorce or have more children. But the odds of divorce and of having more children are pretty good. And obviously the odds of saying you'll have a child of a certain sex are pretty good, too - there are only two choices, after all.

Throw out enough guesses and the occasional hit takes on special significance of the "how did she know that? " type. But she didn't "know" it at all. Just a lucky guess.

I went to a medium with ten other people. She would zone in on a particular name and then the person that it was aimed at would raise their hand. Then to validate that it was for real, she would add something about the person who had passed over. Gave me the creeps. and I thought it was a hoax BUT then she said Jasmine .......I raised my hand in disbelief and she said...Jasmine said to get over it....Our dog was Jasmine and my husband and I mourned her death. We really loved this dog. Two months later we went and got another dog...She did get my nephew who was killed in a car accident and said that it didnt hurt. Also remarked about the car that was coming towards him when he swerved out of the way ....I was scared to death of this but I still wonder about it.

The medium would only allow yes, no or raise your hand things.

Yes I have been to one that was legit over 20 years ago. He was VERY detail about certain things that would happen, and they did happen. I haven never been to someone that good. He would also tell us don't come back within a certain time period to wait.

Me and my friend wish we knew where he was now, last we heard he moved to FL many years ago.

I went to psychic Medium George years ago. The man didn't even know my name and he was extremely accurate, named names and much more. I taped the session and listen every once in a while.

He would also tell us don't come back within a certain time period to wait.

This guy told me the same thing - he said he doesn't encourage that I come back for at least two years.

He also encouraged that I take as many notes as I wanted - I laughed at first, but he started telling me so much stuff I knew there was no way I would remember it all.

He said over the years he has determined that he has about a 90% accuracy rate. He said that sometimes he is off with dates and timing a little bit - but that he's usually right on the mark with everything else. He didn't hold back at all - told me the good and the bad.

I would say that he was more psychic than medium. One family member did "come through", with enough info that made me believe it was legitimate.

The appointment setting process was very discreet - only first names given and they didn't want to know who recommended you. It was cash only - so no name/address info on a check or credit card.

I've googled myself enough times to know what information is out there about me - but some things he said - there is no way he would know otherwise.

I have been read by a few Psychics and was even married by one (long story) and I have never felt as though they were legitimate.....

Personal experience aside James Randi and now the James Randi Educational Foundation has offered "a one-million-dollar prize to anyone who can show, under proper observing conditions, evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event." Surprise , surprise many psychics have tried and all have failed.....

Link to JREF if OP or anyone else is interested....

Mackeysmom - Yes the exact same thing, Always paid cash, and this was before the internet! His timing was off on some things, but he was right on with stuff. At the time I would be like why is he even telling me this -

We could tape the session and I wish I still had those tapes.

I don't think anyone is psychic at all. I think some people are good at picking up on queues or phrasing things in a way that makes them sound like they are specific to you while they are really just a generalization based on observable reactions and social engineering.

I also think people want validation for things and these mediums and psychics give that to them. I don't really think dad, mom, wife, husband, or anyone else is talking from beyond the grave but some people want to believe so badly they do. For example, if someone's kid committed suicide and the medium says "it wasn't your fault dad" that is something the person may want to hear even though it is a complete fabrication by the medium.

I could be wrong but that is what I think.

My sister and I did one of those "psychic fair" things for kicks years ago. The famous Irene Hughes was there, and I had a reading with her.

She was completely inaccurate in every way. :rotfl2:

So no, I totally don't believe in psychics.

That is exactly what I've always said - and if somebody else had posted this thread a week ago - that's how I would have responded. :)

But after the session that I had, I have to re-think my stance a little bit. There were too many things that can't be shrugged off or chalked up to me wanting to read something into what he said.

DH's work used to have a company picnic every summer and they would bring in a bunch of psychics in to do readings.

I went there first when we got there the first year - DH was dropping the kids off at some event they were doing on the other side of the grounds.

I didn't say a word and she didn't ask me any questions. I just sat down and she started talking.

She told me our house would sell but not as soon as we thought. We did not have our house up for sale but a developer had come by and talked to us about buying it and then dropped it. Then, he showed up again 3 months later and 6 weeks after that we were in our new house.

DH showed up and she told us some personal stuff about our relationship which spot on.

There were other small things she brought up that were accurate too.

As I was getting up to leave, I decided to ask her about our son - everyone had always said that he was an "old soul". She looked at me and said, "No, it's not your son. It's your daughter; she's been here for a very long time." :scared1:

I hadn't mentioned having a daughter and DH had said nothing about the kids when he came in.

I don't know - most people I think are not legit. But her......

No one at DH's work knew about any of the stuff she talked about and no one from the company had met me yet so it's not like someone could have told her that stuff beforehand or even pointed me out as DH's wife.

We have had things happen in our family that leads me to believe that there might be a reason to believe. Just not to believe everybody. :)

I had a reading done many years ago. Many things came true. I wouldnt mind having another reading by someone thats legit.

I've never been to a psychic or a medium, but I've gotta say, I think it would be a neat thing to do. I believe there are some people who truly have a "gift" and I think there are many people who are scam artists and get lucky with some of their observations.

I'm sure everyone has stories like this, but I remember the one time I ever played with a Ouija Board. It was in high school, during a play rehearsal. We were all gathered around the board (and I have to say, NONE of us believed in such crazy things, and we were all just laughing and joking around). The board "said" someone in the room was going to die at 21. (Actually it spelled out "room" "die" "2" "1". ) I admit, we freaked out a little, but didn't give it too much thought. It was just a half hour in a few teenagers' lives. After graduation, I left the area to go to college. One night, I got a call from a high school friend telling me that Alice, another girl who had been playing with the Ouija Board that day after school, had died of a sudden heart attack. She died one day before her 21st birthday. :scared1: Since then, I wonder.....

And OP - I think readings from psychics are a lot like believing in UFO's. If you haven't seen one, you think those who claim they have are "crackpots" and it's easy to debunk their theory. But, if you believe you've had an true experience, your mindset changes and you wonder if it's possible. Because, there's truly no other logical explanation for what you've experienced, you look for something outside your realm of "truth". Does that make any sense?

Anyway, I'd welcome the opportunity to sit with a medium. It would be very interesting to see what she/he had to say. But I'll never, ever play with a Ouija board again.

I hope for my own sake, that the Tag Fairy stays far away from this thread! :lmao:

I think you nailed it - makes perfect sense to me :)

I think most people who claim to be psychic are not.

I did go to one years ago however, to lead me to think that it's not all bunk. She started out just by telling me some random things about myself which were true and kind of general. One of the things she told me was that I didn't like my first name. And that is true, but I never really told anyone or talked about it.

At the end of the session, she asked if I had any questions. I asked her if I had a guardian angel and if so can you let me know what his/her name is. :littleangel:

She said Maria and that's the name you wanted when you were young.

I almost fell off my seat, because when I was little I loved Maria's name on Sesame Street. I thought it was the most beautiful name. Again, it's not something I told anyone (or they could google). My husband didn't even know about that!

So I wouldn't make big life decisions on anyone's else's take on my life. But I do believe that we are all connected and some people can access that "link" better than others.
