After years of watching their cousins and friends play their DS'S...Our children are starting to get interested in having one's of their own. They are 6 and 8, and I know we are probabaly a bit late jumping on this band wagon, but I think it may be their gift this year from Santa.

If it was you...which would you buy and why?

A DSI or a PSP?

We will be travelling a lot this year and thought they would be good to occupy them in cars and planes and trains.

DD didn't really like playing the PSP, so we got her a DSI. The games are more fun and there is a better selection for kids. She likes the DSI much more than the PSP.

depends really. From my standpoint PSP is much better when you include movies. I have yet to touch my sons DS but i bought my oldest son's psp when he was selling it. the games have better graphics, like I said tons of feature movies, better battery life crisper screen.

DS is probably better for the age you say though as there are alot of games for younger crowd. Really a preference. my oldest son and I would tell you psp and its not even a contest, my youngest would probably tell you DS but likes the psp

You are definately not too early my DS got his at 4 and my DD got hers at 5. My DS (13) has both and definately prefers the DS Lite. DSI just takes pictures and I thought that was something he didnt need to do with his game. Now they have DS XL which is a bigger screen and can go online wireless. If you just want to try them out you can get DS Lites or DSi used for pretty cheap at gamestop that way if they dont play with them you dont have a big investment. Also around the holidays they have trade in specials so you can trade in your DS for a DSXL for about 70 dollars off. These are a lifesaver for my kids for our 16hr drives to disney. I also have one because they have some great games to grown ups too!. You can also play games with each other in the car if each person has a DS. They link wireless. They are great!!! One game I would recommend for little kids is Cooking Mama. Any version is great and I love it too!

too!

YOu can go online with DSi too.

you've been able to go online with psp before DS was thought of ;):thumbsup2 lol

For those ages, the DSi for sure. The PsP is a more mature gaming system and has more games targeted to that audience

Nintendo DS all the way.

My son has a DS and a PSP...hardly ever touches the PSP.

Nintendo Games tend to be much more family friendly IMO.

Lot's of neat DS games for us "big kids" also...Brain Age is really cool...and I LOVE Mario Kart DS.

IMO, the internet capabilities of these machines are mostly a gimmick. The user interface with the PSP is so clunky, you'll never use it...

man it's so funny how people can have such different opinions on things. not that either is wrong or right just funny.

psp interface is prefectly fine to me, but i am a sony user over xbox also. i perfer ps3 over xbox (my son has a 360 i have a ps3) i prefer nintendo wii over xbox actually, so im not a nintendo basher just prefer psp light years ahead of dsi but again i agree if its for smaller kids then dsi is probably the way to go for the OP but as for "big kids" psp is far superior to ds

My comment on the user interface was in regards to using the PSP to access the internet. The method of entering a web address is what is "clunky". It's neat that you can access the web, but it's not very useful IMO. The screen is just too small to display a web page properly. Takes too much "effort" to scroll around on a web page.

Thanks so much for all the comments... looks like it's a pretty powerful DS vote though doesn't it. Plus I guess if I go that route they can always trade games with their cousins as well.

Thanks again.

There are more games with the DS - and a wider variety of them - from young child to adult. I prefer my DS - I love the brain games. :)

DH41 plays on his PSP only. DS15, plays both his DS and DH's PSP. DD13 plays only her DS. DH says the games for the DS are not geared for his age and playing style. DD says the games for the PSP are for gamers, not someone who just likes to play games.

The one nice feature of the PSP, is the kids each have a couple of movies they like that they can watch on it while in the car. We don't have a DVD player, nor do we want one, and this makes long distance travel a bit easier on them. We have barrowed my parents DVD player for road tips of 4+ hours one way, but it was a hassel with having to store it somewhere in the back seat of the car for them to easily get to.

this part is false! taking into account how long psp has been around.

the wider variety part is somewhat true, but no psp does have more games.

considering im an iphone and blackberry user, i guess im just used to that, hahahaha

I've never had a PSP so I can't chime in about how good or bad that handheld is. But I've had a Nintendo Gameboy since the very first black and white ones came out and I now have a DS Lite. I'm planning on buying the new 3DS (DS with 3D that doesn't need special glasses) when it comes out later this year. Also, you might want to look into buying a used DS Lite for your kids. A used one will play the games just as well but is a lot less painful on the wallet if something were to happen to it.

My son actually got (he asked for it) a plain old Gameboy for Christmas.

He's playing it more than the DS as of late...he like's going "old school"

The DS allows you to use either DS games or Gameboy Advance games. Sometimes it is nice to play a classic. It is versatile which is nice because Sony seems to be going away from being able to play older games. According to the websites, the DS currently has 1,317 games whereas the PSP has 627. There was a time when it seemed like Sony was looking to stop developing for the PSP because new game releases were few and far between. Perhaps you are thinking about the Playstation...because yes, that has a heck of a lot more games than any Nintendo format...but they do not have the same games. We have both, and I thought the PSP was great, but the game variety sucked. The DS can hold my attention and I have never been disappointed with the variety.

Between my siblings and I, we have 7 boys ranging from 2yrs old to 11yrs old. Its a DSi family here! None of them have ever wanted a PSP.
