Yep, and you have to hope they don't leave it on the tarmac and leave you standing there waiting on a bag that never comes (which is what happened to me)If it meets the carry-on dimensions for the airline and one of the flights on a commuter plane I've never given it a second thought other than to keep my true valuables in my under the seat tote or purse. I'll often put my under the seat tote in the overhead after gate-checking the wheelie bag.
They literally tag while I hand it to them on the tarmac. Upon deplaning, people who gate-checked bags wait on the tarmac and are handed their bag.
My bigger concern is if there will be overhead space on a jet; if there isn't any then they will check the bag through to the destination for pickup at baggage claim. That only happened to me once, the tag they used didn't even have a bar code; I never thought I'd see that bag again!
You'd think it would be fool proof but nope
Thankfully, both Delta and AA use barcoded tags for gate checked bags now. At least I was able to track it
