Protein powder or drink?

Does anyone have a protein powder or drink that they recommend? I need to get more calories and protein in my diet, and my dr. suggested trying a protein powder. I am not a fan of Ensure or those types of things, particularly.

Some of the powders seem kind of pricey, and I hate to plunk down a bunch of $ for something that tastes gross!

So, what are your favorite kinds/flavors? I don't have any particular requirements, except it must be low fat... just one that tastes okay so I will drink it. Do you mix with milk? Water? Something else? ...

I really like the GNC Total Lean Chocolate Protein powder. It has 3 grams of fat and 25 grams of protein. I mix it with skim milk. It is not chalky or weird tasting, in my opinion and I have tried a lot of protein drinks, both powder and ready to drink ones. They also have Vanilla and Strawberry, I think. Good luck!:goodvibes

I like Isopure chocolate. I add some sugar free hot cocoa, some peanut butter, banana, ice and almond milk and blend. It's very yummy.

My husband has tried a few, and has done a lot of research.

He definitely buys GOLD STANDARD 100% WHEY protein powder.
This is by OM (optimum nutrition)
He is choosy about what he will buy and use.

He buys the chocolate.

The container shows for one 32gram scoop, only 1.5 grams of fat.

One really has to be careful about what they might be putting in these powders. You don't want one with a lot of questionable weight-loss additives.

The above poster who mentioned the recipe with the banana and peanut butter is right on... My husband has been doing this, using low-fat milk instead of almond milk. And, it is actually a pretty good drink! You should give it a try. I will get his recipe if you like.

It has low-fat milk, (we don't always have almond milk)
ice,
half a banana,
some peanut butter,
the protein powder,
and I like to stir in a dab of chocolate syrup. (many hot chocolate mixes are not really good for you!) To make batches of syrup with your own cocoa, a little natural sugar, and maybe a splash of vanilla, would be best. As many are sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. We like to avoid that!

Thanks! The recipe does sound interesting - I can't do much peanut butter, but making more of a shake/smoothie would probably taste better than just mixing it in milk!

I use low fat milk if I don't have almond milk as well. Isopure was recommended to me by a bariatric surgeon because of its low carb. I'm trying to remember the name of the other one he gave me samples of. It had 'jury' in the name.

I like Muscle Milk. You can get it in powder form or pre-made shakes. If you buy it at Costco when it's on sale, it's a much better price than buying the 4-packs. I prefer the chocolate over the vanilla.

I used to use a different powder (100% whey) when I was eating the Atkins way, but I can't remember what it was now.

Injury is the brand name of protein powder that is often used following bariatric surgery. Another popular brand is Nectar. I personally prefer the ready to serve products. The powders always feel gritty to me. My personal favorite is Premier protein at Costco. I prefer the chocolate, but the vanilla is okay too (30 grams protein, 160 calories). My second favorite is EAS advantage (17 grams protein, 100 calories). It comes in vanilla, choc, and strawberry. I like them all. I also like Atkins advantage bars. Many of them have 15 or more grams of protein. Hope you find something you like!

Does the Muscle Milk you make yourself (from the powder) taste just like the premade shakes? I have tried those before and... not a fan. :worried:

I'm fine with a higher carb, higher sugar mix if it tastes better. More calories! :)

I use the Myo Fusion Probiotic Series in Vanilla and in Chocolate. I do mix it into smoothies using my Nutribullet. I use spinach, fruit (fresh and frozen), greek yogurt, green tea or water... whatever I have on hand. Today I did vanilla powder with grapes, spinach, frozen peaches, and frozen strawberries.

I like the powder better, plus it allows me to mix it with milk and make it creamier.

This is the second time I've seen Nutribullet mentioned online. What is so special about this that a blender can't do? My blender makes smoothies, soups/puree, and crushes ice. I'm all for trying new things, but I can't justify spending over $100 for it. So I'm looking for first hand knowledge of it to see if I'm missing something. Thanks

It is only $100 and blends my stuff smoother then any blender I have used. Now, I have never had a blender that cost more then $150, but still. It can do anything I have used a blender for in the past and is smaller. I like when I use it for smoothies since it is blended IN what you can drink it from so less dishes.

Muscle Milk lite version. Fewer fat grams and calories, protein still high. I mix in blender with ice and water. I am not a milk drinker. DD likes the strawberry flavored ones mixed with plain almond milk. If you don't have a problem with gluten, the cookies and cream is good. If you first try them at GNC, they will let you return anything you don't like.

I use Jillian Michaels brand, the chocolate and the vanilla, and I buy it on Amazon. Her chocolate is the only one that doesn't taste "gritty" to me when I mix it with Almond Milk. I got one of those blender ball cups and drink those shakes. I use the vanilla when I make smoothies in the blender.

Another vote for Isopure - if you mix with lowfat milk they taste even better than with just water. DW and I both like the Dutch Chocolate, and French Vanilla - that one really needs to be done with milk. We've also tried the Chocolate Mint - I'm not a big fan - DW is, but then again she like Mint Choc Chip ice cream and I don't, and we've also tried the Strawberries & Cream also pretty good. You can pick them up online or at your local GNC - look for the 50% off sale when GNC has that - otherwise it get's really expensive.

Any Ideal Protein product is amazing. It is not cheap but results are worth it. I also use Kirkland protein shakes, very good and not too expensive

We are looking into buying a VitaMix....
Talk about pricey!!!
We went to a demo... they just threw whole fruits and veggies in there... yes, whole... And it made amazing and super smooth smoothies in seconds. Quiet too. I am now a believer.
