My GI wants me to start adding protein powder to smoothies. The problem is....I have not been able to find one that does not have either egg protein or soy protein in it. I am allergic to both.

If anyone has any ideas that would be great.

Also....I am allergic to all nuts, wheat and oats as well (plus a whole load of other things)

Can you not have whey protein? There are ones available without the ingredients you mentioned.

For now, yes. But I am supposed to limit it. I can't have anything with a "may contain" warning for nuts or eggs or made in the same facility warning for nuts.

I have not been able to find ones that meet that criteria. Which brands have you seen?

Whey Cool is one I'm thinking of but it's very pricey. Is soy lechitin off-limits too? Most whey powders have that, but it's not the same as "soy protein". The problem is most soy-free use eggs and most egg-free use soy as emulsifiers.

Soy lechitin is okay in small amounts. I don't seem to React to it...yet. But my soy allergy is pretty new.

I've noticed that its either egg or soy used. It was fine when I wasn't allergic to soy 2 months ago....but I've reacted to soy twice in the past month and tested positive so now both egg and soy are off limits...

Sun Warrior. It's really good. I read that Victoria Secret model Miranda Kerr uses that or once did. I hoped that I would look like her if I used that one :rotfl: (hasn't happened, LOL)

But seriously, that's the one I use, the classic vanilla (and I have a nut allergy too). It's soy, dairy, egg free.

I looked at the website....do these contain coconut? It looks like the Medium chain triglycerides are from coconut? But I'm not entirely sure? It doesn't say coconut in the ingredients but at the bottom of the page it talks about coconut MCTs. Do you know if that means that there is actually coconut in the product?

I am also allergic to coconut:headache: it looks like a great product and it doesn't meet all the other requirements for me though.

You could email and ask them as Im not sure. I'm not allergic to coconut so have never had to worry. As long as its nut free I'm ok. But I know the natural only lists rice and salt in the ingredients. I'm sure they would have an email address on their site to contact :)

I use vegan Rice Protein powder. No soy, dairy or egg proteins

MCTs are often from coconut oil. It's the cheapest place to get them. They may or may not bother someone with coconut issues, because they're just the oil, and then pretty refined in order to separate out just the medium-chain triglycerides.

You could try Vivonex, Glutasolve, Medline Active Protein, Vectron, Pro-stat, hi-cal, Nepro, ProMod, TwoCal....

There's a slew of options. so it should just be a matter of trial and error to see which one you can tolerate the taste of and can digest easily. For the medical ones, your pharmacist may be able to help, or you can just browse through the online product catalogs for the major medical nutrition houses. Most of it can be purchased via Amazon/Drugstore.com/walmart.com/etc.

I use a rice protein powder that is pretty good. That is probably your best bet. If you go to a Whole Foods or other "natural store" they will have a bigger selection. You will just need to look at the individual bottles to see if they are manufactured in a facility that manufactures the others. You should ask your GI for a specific recommendation or see a nutritionist if you truly have that humber of allergies.

I've looked at our whole foods and sprouts and haven't been able to find anything. I'll have to go to another whole foods and look. All of the ones my GI recommended have egg or soy components to them.

I think I've just become so frustrated. We've been looking for a couple of months now and we haven't been able to find one that works.

Doesn't your GI know about your allergies? It sounds like you need to make another appointment and maybe ask to see a nutritionist. Eliminating that many foods from your diet is going to make it hard to eat properly, you really need some more help than what you can find in an online forum, particularly if your doctor is not aware of your allergies.

How were your allergies diagnosed and what is the nature of them? Did you undergo any kind of testing or did you self diagnose? If your GI is aware of your allergies, did he tell you why he was recommending powders that contain allergens?

I would ask for a nutrition consult. I think at this point it should be pretty easy to get everyone to the table, right?!
I bet that your GI has one in their office. Usually they do and they are pretty awesome. I LOVED our nutritionists - we had them in both endocrine office and GI office, and they were amazing gals!!! They were so creative. Come with written down questions and ideas (recipes) and have fun!

Yes he is aware of my allergies. All of my allergies were diagnosed with a combination of either skin/RAST/positive oral challenge or skin/previous known reaction. All allergies are IgE reactions. Eggs, peanuts, shellfish and tree nuts are known anaphylaxis. Soy, oats, coconut, broccoli, sesame are just hives so far. Wheat is Skin and GI problems. Raw fruits and veggies are oral allergy syndrome so itchy mouth and throat....sometimes a little swelling.

He didn't realize the powders contained the allergens. He didn't have the ingredients. He gave me the names and I said I would look them up and find out if they were okay.

I have a nutritionist. My diet is not bad except for the fact that I can eat much because of chronic constipation/gastroperisis.

I get the correct amount of fiber, all of my servings of fruits and veggies (cooked, frozen or canned), and I limit my sugar intake.

The big issue is, no matter how good my diet is, I just don't get enough calories. The only nutritional issue from a vitamin/supplement position is a low B12 level. But that's been an issue for a long time.

Cooking is not the issue. Right now I have homemade gluten free veggie lasgna and beef stew with GF biscuits in the freezer for this week. I love cookie and have a huge index of recipes....I just can't eat a lot.

Believe me, I'm not trying to get medical information from the boards. I have 10 doctors of my own and I am very good about getting the care I need.

I just figured that while my GI is trying to find a suitable protein supplement for me, that maybe someone here would know of something as well.

The nutritionist is not in his office. She is part of the medical group that my internist, dermatologist, GYN, and neurologist are part of. The rest of my doctors have their own private practices but are attendings at the same hospital.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if you just need calories, why not eat more meat, especially not-so-lean meats? A typical 6-oz pork chop with a bit of marbling in it will net you over 600 calories.

Oilier fin-fishes such as salmon and tuna also will give you a calorie boost.

Because I have gastroperisis, gallbladder and pancreas issues that were dealing with right now. It limits how much solid food I can eat and also limits high fat foods.

I'll have to check the whole foods near the hospital to see if they carry some of these.
