We have a solid railing (Handicap Room) Will this be ok?
DGrandmother needs this stateroom.

Will our DS(7) see over?

We are at the back aft, deck 7 of the ship.

How is the view in port?

Anyone piled up lifejackets/books, ect. so child could see over?
We have decided and talked to DS about not looking over in chairs.

Any suggests about a child and solid verandahs?

Thanks
Linda Going in 14 days, Can't wait.:sunny:

I just had stateroom 7130, which has the solid verandah and is aft.

I would think that your child would be able to see over the rail. I would not recommend letting him stand on anything if he wants to lean over further, unless you're there and have a firm grip on him. I'd still be hesitant, but you'll be the best judge once you see what he's able to view unassisted.

Oh No, WE would never do anything unsafe with our DS.

Just wondering how high the solid verandah is ?

What you can see?

Will we be disappointed with a solid verandah?

I have to admit, when you asked about piling up lifejackets and books, I got a bit nervous.

From an adult's perspective, I could see everything. From the level of a 7 year old, it's hard to say.

I would guesstimate that the rails are around 40" high. Perhaps someone else has the specific dimensions.

Thank you. Did'nt want the wrong idea.

Just want everyone to be happy with the view.

Would never put DS in harm.....

The top rails is about "standard" height.

If you can go to a multi-story shopping mall and your son can see over the railing there, that's about how high the railings are (solid or plexi-glass).

Personally I hated that solid verandah...I couldn't sit out there and look out at the water...if Iwanted to se the water I had to stand up....some people love them but personally I felt it ruined the whole verandah experience for me. We had a handicap room and as I sat out there I couldn't help but wonder what bozo thought to put the handicap rooms back there where the verandah is solid so the actual people in wheelchairs who need that room, couldn't even see the water from the verandah they paid for!

Talk about a serious design flaw!
I hope that you have written a letter to them so that maybe they would correct it either at a dry dock or if they build that third ship.

Our first cruise was a 3 nighter years ago and we were talked out of the Verandah for the Navigators Verandah by a DCL phone rep - who insisted that it would be fun for our son (4) to have the ability to pretend he could navigate the ship.

Well, there were a few interesting navigational items but the challenge of seeing the water was our concern. He wanted to stand up by himself (big NO NO) so we would have to hold him either on the chair or in our arms. Plus we couldn't see the water when we were seated either indoors or outdoors.

All other cruises have been with verandahs and we have been very pleased.

Here are some pictures comparing the two types of verandah: http://www.disneycruiser.info/metal.htm

Here are some comments from my recent trip report:

We had originally booked stateroom 7010 (Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom) on Deck 7 Forward, but were upgraded to stateroom 7134 on Deck 7 Aft. This is a Category 5 Deluxe Stateroom with Verandah. This was the metal verandah and I really preferred the Plexiglas verandah that DH and I had in 2002 because you could see out while sitting in the chairs. It was still great to have the metal verandah, though, and my Mom really enjoyed being able to go out there and look at the water and watch us pulling into port and docking.

Here are a couple of views from our room while in port:
