I tried to use the search but it didn't work so forgive meif this has been asked...

What are the Pros and Cons of using the Disney Magical Express transportation to and from the airport? I don't know if we are flying United or Southwest yet.

Also if I don't choose the Magical Express when I book our vacation, can I add it later?

Thanks!

We have never used ME and never will because:

We do not like busses

We do not want to wait for the bus to leave the airport

We do not like sitting on a crowded bus

We do not want to make numerous stops before getting to our resort

We do not want to wait for our luggage

We do not trust anyone to deliver our luggage to us

We use Tiffany Town car. The driver is always waiting for you at baggage claim, the driver helps with luggage and the car is waiting right outside. We drink a cold water in a cool and calm car while we go directly to our resort with our bags....no I do not mind paying for that.

The best pro I can see is that you don't have to worry about lugging around your bags once you get down there, and getting onto the bus, the only down side is that yor bags aren't with you when you check in, they still show up an hour or so later. But like us you may get a break and your bags show up close after you get to your room, that happened to us. We got there in the early eve and our bags showed up less than a half hour after us. But we sometimes go to DTD and wander around to wind down. Then when you leave if your airline is part of ME you can do checkin at the resort and not at the airport, leave your bags with them and they take care of the rest, easy. We've never had a problem with ME since we started to use them.
32 days and counting, not soon enough!! :bounce:

We just returned from WDW, and since we were trying to stay on somewhat of a budget, the ME seemed perfect for us. We were not let down, we had terrific service!

When we arrived at MCO, we found ME pretty easily and was checked in within about 3 minutes or so. The staff was friendly and answered any questions (our flight had been changed, so I inquired about that). They directed us to the ME line for POR, and we waited maybe 10 minutes at the most to board a bus.

There were four stops, ours was 3rd. I didn't mind because I enjoyed getting a brief view of the other resorts. At our stop, we were dropped off at the main entrance and were on our way. This was around noon. After checking in we went to the park and when we were returned around 10, all of our luggage was in our room, just as they had promised. We loved this service!!

The day before we departed they put an envelope and paper on our resort door and gave us our time to return to that drop off. Our driver was right on time. Again we made a few stops at other resorts, and then we were dropped off at the airport.

When we return to WDW, if this service is still offered, we will definitely use it again. In our opinion, it was wonderful, met all of our needs, and was free!

Edited to Add: DH does most of our driving, esp on trips. He LOVED that we didn't have to bother with getting a rental, fumbling with a map, etc. Of course, he loved that about all the Disney Transportation.

Unless you feel you are too good to ride on a bus, take advantage of Magical Express. We prefer driving to Orlando, but did take advantage of Magical Express last August. Pretty hassle free. Just have a backpack with any essentials you might need while at WDW. The seats are comfy...Charter style busses, not metro busses. We had a driver who actually had the kids (and adults) joining in sing-alongs. I was suprised since they dont work for disney, but Mears. Who needs a stinking limo. More Disney speding money!

We loved DME! The 2 biggest "pros" for us were...
(1) Not having to deal with luggage! This is a big deal with small children.
(2) Checking in for our return flight at our resort. Again, no lines at the airport is a big deal with small children.
(3) IT'S FREE!!!! (Not many of those at WDW!)

The "cons"...
(1) Yes, you have to wait for the bus. However, that said, our wait was very short.
(2) You have to leave your resort for the airport sooner than I would like and sooner than we did when we rented a car.

That said, we are using DME for the second time on our upcoming trip, and will use it again...even if (WHEN) Disney starts to charge for the service!

Hijack follow up.

I have a 7:00 am return flight. I am assuming that they are used to that sort of thing but my mother is comming back a few days before the rest of us and is already nervous (October trip). I told her that they transport millions of people and she can't be the dumbest one. Will she have any problem getting to the plane for 7:00am. Thanks.

Thank you all so much for your quick responses. It sounds like Magical Express is the way to go especially since I won't have to deal with the luggage.

We've used a town car before and have liked the personal service but I think I will give DME a try.

Again thank you everyone

Each one of the above is an EXCELLENT reason not to use DME. If all of those things are important to you and you are willing to pay for it, then it's great that such services are available to you.

I love DME. I think it's the greatest thing since Mickey met Goofy. Many people agree with me. It's served over 2 million people (about 5,000 - 10,000 per day) thus far, and it's so successful that it has been extended through at least 2011 (it was slated to end in the fall of 2006).

DME is free, convenient, and surprisingly speedy. The reported average time from landing to resort drop-off is 70 minutes. It's also wonderful not to have to carry your luggage -- once you check it in at your home airport, the next time you see it will be inside your resort room (EVERYONE gets this, REGARDLESS OF AIRLINE). You get to totally skip baggage claim, which is quite nice.

DME is a shared ride on a bus. It is not private, and it may or may not be a direct ride to your resort. DME buses will stop at no more than 4 resorts. Most stop at 2 or 3, with 1 and 4 being rare, reportedly. And if your bus stops at 3 resorts, you have a one in three chance of your resort being the first!

ANother little-publicized but very real perk of DME is room assignment. When you check in at the DME Welcome Center at the airport (where you stop before you go to your bus), a message is sent to your resort. If there is a room clean and available that matches your reservation and request type, then that room is held for you. Let's say therre was only one room of that type ready at that time -- it's now yours. Let's say one minute later another family arrives AT THE RESORT (they landed before you did, or they drove their own car from home, etc.) and they have the same reservation type as you. SInce you got the last available room set aside for you a minute earlier, they'll be told their room isn't ready yet. When you arrive on your bus 30 or 45 minutes later, when you go to check in you'll be told your room is ready, while the family that actually got to the resort before you is still waiting for their room (if no others have been cleaned yet). This is a nice "pro" of DME.

Also, the luggage is tightly controlled. Before you leave home, you put a special yellow pre-printed luggage tag on each checked bag. One of the things printed on there is a barcode, which is tied in with your reservation information; another is a pretty visible code for which "zone" your resort is in, for easier visual identification to help prevent any potential mistakes. At Orlando's airport, these bags are pulled from the rest of the bags and are handled by DME. The bags are brought to a central collection point, and the barcodes get scanned. They're then brought to a central distribution point, scanned again. They're then sorted and placed into steel cages, scanned again. The cages are then loaded onto trucks, and the trucks are tracked by GPS, so Disney literally always knows exactly where each of your bags is. The luggage is delivered to your resort's Bell Services, scanned again. Your resort's Bell Services staff deliver your bags to the inside of your room (whether you're in there or not), scanned agai for a 5th and final time.

Bags are typically arrive about 2-3 hours after you do. If you know this going in, it's no problem. When my luggage arrived, my wife and I had our 2 pre-schoolers in the pool enjoying the beginning of our vacation. We had our swim stuff in our carry-ons. Besides, I always pack my carry-on for the first 24 hours of my trip just in case the AIRLINE delays my luggage; I do this every time I fly anywhere, it's my own version of travel insurance.

So, is DME for you? Depends on what's important to you. If privacy and pampering and the personal touch are important for you, then a car service is just the ticket for you. If that stuff doesn't matter to you, if you like efficient and speedy and FREE transportation, if you like the idea of bering able to skip baggage claim, then give DME a try.

The Transportation forum has several "stickies" about DME, plus dozens and dozens of other threads. I've read VERY, VERY FEW COMPLAINTS from people who've actually used DME, and MANY MANY POSITIVE EXPERIENCES, like mine.

Used ME way back in 1999. And yes, I'm using it this trip too. It's a no brainer for me! :thumbsup2

DME is a 24/7 operation. As long as she has a DME reservation she'll be fine. For return to MCO, DME pick-ups are typically scheduled 2.75-to-3 hours prior to flight departure.

DME started on May 5, 2005.

a big con that i didn't like was having to wait until midnight for our bags.

we were dropped off at the hotel and 3 hours from then we were supposed to go to Cirque and our luggage still hadn't gotten there.

no one told me to "pack essentials in your carry-on" when we talked to them so i had some of my medication(luckily not all of it), all of my clothes and a few other things in my luggage. we had to go to Cirque that night and come back and unpack at midnight.

we used to use Mears. i really like it better. you stay with your luggage the whole trip and they drop you off right at your resort.

We opted to get a rental car for under $200. Its not that we thought we were too good for a bus - its that for us, this was a better match. We had two children with us, and wanted the freedom of not having to wait for a bus that maybe very crowded and then have to sit through numerous stops.

I think it wasnt a very nice to say to goofie4goofy. Everyone wants different things out of a vacation. I totally agree with goofie

With Magical Express you still have the choice* of staying with your baggage the whole trip. Going to Disney, simply do not attach the yellow tags and go to the carousel in Orlando to get your luggage the normal way. Bring the luggage to the ME welcoming area almost the same way you used to ride Mears regular shuttle. (Currently the ME welcoming area is next to the Mears desk)

And going home you have the choice of having your luggage travel with you (under the ME bus cabin).

OT: Although ME per se did not exist back then, ME is almost identical to Disney Cruise Line ground transportation and is in many ways similar to Mears' regular shuttle.

*On extremely rare extremely crowded occasions ME guests have been required to "recheck" luggage at the welcoming area for automatic resort delivery.

About the 7am flight--we just flew out of Orlando this morning, using DME, and our flight was for 7:14 am. We were told to be at our stop at 4am (you are supposed to arrive 15 minutes early). We arrived around 3:40 and the bus arrived right at 4am. We made a few stops and arrived at MCO at 5am. It worked perfectly for us!

I had a slightly different experience with DME, and I thought it was delightful.

It was my solo trip to WDW in early December. I never did sign up for DME because I heard that SouthWest was not participating. I usually get my Mears vouchers when I get the flight from my travel agent. This time, though, I decided that I would get my Mears vouchers when I land at the airport. No problem there.

When I got to the Mears counter, the person insisted that as long as I was going to a Disney resort, and I already got my luggage from baggage claim, I am eligible for DME.

I thought the ride was delightful. The bus was only about one-tenth full, and they showed the Disney Parks on the TVs on the bus. I was able to stay with my luggage. My bus made a couple of other stops, which was OK because I got to peek at other resorts.

And it was FREE !

I like the idea of DME (will try it out in Aug) for almost the exact opposite reasons. Mass transit (in this form, a bus) is important to me because it uses less resources than each individual having their own vehicle. I don't mind a crowd - the whole darn trip is going to be one and the DME bus is NOTHING like the park bus. What's waiting 10-20 minutes for a bus? To me, nothing. In the end, it's a wash as you might get stuck in traffic if you left 10-20 minutes earlier. (O/T but I feel the same way about speeding. You can't possibly get there THAT much faster, so why not be safe/enjoy the trip?). As far as luggage goes - my sense is that DME is better with luggage than airlines, so after having an airline have at it with my luggage, why not let DME take care of it and give me a bit more of a break.

There's a lot more discussion about Magical Express over on the Transportation board.

As for our experiences with ME, they were great last year when we used them in June. We're using them again in a couple of days for our trip.

No matter where I fly, no matter WHERE, I pack for the first 24 hours in my carry-on just in case the AIRLINE delays my luggage. It's just self-protective, it's like my version of travel insurance.

Number one, it's a matter of keeping yourself informed. I used DME when it was 4 days old, and I knew to pack essentials in my carry-on. No one "told me," but since I took the time to learn how the system worked (and this was before anyone else had used it and posted about it!), I figured out what would be in my own best interest.
