Propane fryer?

A propane turkey fryer ?? I can't imagine they would be ok, as they are very picky about fireplaces having to be approved with no open flames.

I can't recall seeing anywhere that they cannot be used at the Fort, but PaHunter has a point they may so "no" due to the open flame.

I would recommend calling the Fort and asking.

Yes no open flames is mentioned in the registration packet rules. But would call and confirm.

Thanksgiving is usually the busiest day of the year (excluding devils night in Detroit) for most fire depts and its primarily due to propane turkey fryers.

Lol. I've heard that bigdisneydaddy. It probably has something to do with the alcohol consumption on Thanksgiving...:drinking1

We use it for Shrimp boils while camping. I'll call and ask. Thanks!

If you should get me on the phone, you already have my answer, above.

You mean an open flame like this? Lol

I forgot you work there. Thanks. Seriously though. Why is my Coleman propane stove acceptable and not the fryer? Is the stove considered more covered?

I have a mini Weber grill that would do a fine job with a turkey breast, some of the bigger grills could probably handle 2 at a time. I cook full size birds on my Weber at home.

So no propane stoves then?
(No snark, just trying to make sure I understand)

1) No snark.
2) Propane camp stoves are a different matter.
3) I have seen many "Coleman-style" propane camp stoves, just as I have seen many charcoal grills.
4) But, propane fryers are notorious for misuse and fires.
. . . the flames on a fryer are usually pretty large and tall
. . . the oil overflows and reaches them, EVERYTHING goes up, including the remaining oil in the vessel
. . . such fryers need constant attention, which few campers provide
5) But, hey, they might get lucky and have someone tell the camper a turkey fryer is OK.

NOTE: Just to Clarify - Open flames from logs in pits are not permitted, as embers can fly into the trees or brush, so there is an approved list of fire pits that capture the flying/floating embers. Propane fryers are usually not permitted because the frequent misuse and resulting major fires. If the grease/oil overflows the vessel, a major fire can erupt. Sure, people might overflow grease when using a propane stove, but with far less results.

I understand why no turkey fryers. :) I would never touch one to cook a turkey. (We did use one, however, to boil peanuts for my daughter's band booster snack bar during football games. Always sold out of 2 big turkey pots of peanuts. blech)

The propane fryer I posted, though, is an oil-less one. It cooks through infared, using propane as the heat source. The drippings from the meat gather in a little drawer, that is emptied before moving the fryer. I was wondering if oil-less fryer is allowed. (It's what we use at home, for the turkey. Always comes out moist, with crispy skin all around)

Thanks Rusty, for your explanations. You always make me smile.

1) We cheat

2) I use an electric smoker for ours because I can get a steady heat from it

C) I do like fried turkey, it always tastes fantastic

IV) I just don't like dealing with the oil afterwards

Cinco) Now a fishfry...

They also make an electric oil-less fryer. They run 80-90 bucks. I use the propane one but I think the electric one would do just as well.

Kitchenaid has a neat turkey fryer you want to check out , it might just work for you in camping.

Thanks all! Since we do a shrimp boil that doesn't use oil, and Rustys explanation included the dangers of the oil, I will attempt to gain permission on our trip by triple promising I won't use oil. If I fail then we can always heat the water over a stove. Although have you ever done this? It takes freaking forever. But who can camp without a shrimp boil? Not us.
