Pronunciation clinic

One that doesn't seem to be tied in to any particular region by drives me bonkers is pronouncing the word: Caramel, like CAR(auto) MEL(as in blanc or torme). I mean, there's an "a" in there.

Care-a-mel.

I've never heard of a "Bedroom Suit"...
I usually say it cahmel.
I always am surprised to hear route pronounced as rowt instead of root which is how we say it here. There was a NH newscaster out in Ohio for some tragic news earlier this week and he was mocking the way they say it. As funny as I think rowt sounds (because I'm not used to it), I was really surprised to hear him doing that.

Funniest one to me:

A car ACCIDENT.

Down South:

A WRECK.

Where are you from? I lived in Farmington for 10 years and before that, I lived at the Missile Range down at White Sands when my ex was in the military.

Roswell, born and raised. Never been to Farmington, what's it like? Did you live on a military post on White Sands, or did you live at Hollomon AFB? That would not be fun living on the missle range...you're pretty much out in the middle of no where. What did your ex do while in the military?

I have lived in NC all my life. I never knew that by saying "bedroom suit" it was considered wrong. If I hear the word Suite (sweet) I think of a room - not a collection of furniture.

One that bugs me - Barbecue. Around here, barbecue is cooked meat - a noun. But those in some other states use the word as a verb (for example "lets cook some meat on the barbecue").

Actually, that's being used as a noun, too.

It would be a verb if you said you were going to barbecue some meat--which I have been known to say! :teeth:

I sent you a PM CapeCodTenor, so I wouldn't hijack the thread any further. :teeth:

And, hey, there's more to Roswell than aliens, folks!

Dawn and Don sound like two different names the way I say them. I say D-AWn for Dawn not Dahn for both.
Also Aaron and Erin and Kerri and Carrie, i pronounce different ways, though I have some friends from various plaves around the country that say them the same. Short e on erin and Kerri. Like Eh-rin and Keh-rri and short a on Cah-rrie and Ah-ron.

I have never heard of a bedroom "suit". I actually just say set when talking about furniture.

My Dad used to say ruhf for roof.

This is so funny. I had no idea there were so many variations... even tho' I have many american relatives (cousins, their spouses and families etc). But, I was particularly relieved with the route being pronounced "root" as that's how it is pronounced over here. I actually admit I presumed everyone in the States pronounced it "rowt". Also the mirror thing.. we always laugh at "mear-ror" as it just sounds soooo american. We of course say "mih-ror". Ah we have such boring accents here, but at least they are not english! :rotfl2:

I have never heard of suit for suite before. If someone had said that to me I would have likely had that blank look on my face that says I have no clue what you are talking about. lol

A couple of words I have noticed. Foyer. So many variations of this word I have heard. Foy-yay, foy-yer, fo-er, foy-er (the last 2 make me really cringe lol).

Roof - Is it a big dog barking sound or a little dog barking sound? lol

Myst

Hmmmmmmm Were you really BORN in Roswell?

That's what I'm supposed to tell people anyways. Just look at my tag line. Just remember...you heard nothing from me. ;) ;) ;)

The only one that drives me nuts is:

jew-ler-ee

It's spelled jewelry, therefore should be pronounced:

Jew-el-ree!

This is the only one that makes me bonkers and I'm not sure why--it's not like I own a lot of jewelry or am involved in the business in any way. Good thing, I guess!

Edited to Add: I've never heard of a bedroom suite or suit. We call them sets!
Living room set, Bedroom set, Dining Room set...

A lady I work with pronounces it "jur-ry" - drives me batty!!

well, it's spelled "jewellery" over here, so maybe that's why there's confusion?!

That is the spelling in Canada too. :flower:

I have a friend who pronounces pool and pull the same way. I also know a couple of people who say ong-yun for onion. What's that all about? My DH says fith for fifth- I cringe but I've managed to keep my mouth shut about that one.

Everyone has a dialect/accent (whatever you want to call it). We are starting to see many regional dialects disappear due to mass communication, travel, etc. and many people are made to feel bad about their dialects by others and feel the need "to fit in". It really is a shame to loose all the variety in the different regions of the country. I love to hear th differences in the way people speak, not only in the pronunciation of words but in the words that are chosen.

It will be a sad day when we all sound the same. I am glad to have a southern Appalachian dialect. I like it! BTW, it is pronounced ap-uh-latch-un not ap-uh-lay-shun! Just had to get that in, lol.

I know there are some that I am just not thinking of right now as all I can think of is the fact that whenever I go back to CA, my sisters try to think of clever ways to get me to say words with a long O or OW sound in them. (Their favs are boots, couch. boat and a few others.) Apparently I say them funny. And last time I went to dinner with my sister, I asked what kind pop they had and the waitress looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. Dsis had to translate that I wanted soda.
