Profile of a DVCer ...

Not new to DVC, but fairly new to the boards. We are a family of four - DH (41) is an orthopedic surgeon, myself (39) stay at home mom with an accounting degree, two DD's (13 & 7). We first purchased in 1998 (BWV) when DH was in residency. We added on in 2000 (BWV) and just recently added on again when they opened up the points at the BWV. With 700 points I think we have enough, but who knows what will happen when they open up Saratoga Springs.

We love DVC and go to WDW at least once a year. We went on the 7 day cruise in March, we are going to BWV in June, and on another 7 day cruise next March.

DVC was a great buy for us, because it forces us to take at least one vacation a year. And who could complain about going to WDW.

Me (40) Self-employed accounting software consultant (local and national, thanks to the advent of the Internet)
DH (50) IT head at local RV parts manufacturer (so yes, we can geek out together on computer stuff, and yes, we have a network in our bedroom!)

2nd marriage for both of us (no kids - uck! but 8 dogs - our BABIES) and had 3 WDW trips under our belts. Last year we barely took a vacation, and this year was scheduled to be a Disney year (November). THEN the software firm whose product I support decided to move their annual meeting from Palm Springs (snooze city) to Orlando (June), and suddenly we were planning 2 trips to FL in one year!

The more I planned (oh, LORDY was it a bad thing when I first started discovering Disney sites on the Web), the more wonderful I felt about the trips, and I realized that we HAD to take a GOOD trip every year. We just needed to. We reconnect so much when we're on a vacation, and have SUCH a good time together. (That couple that looks old enough to know better who are skipping through the parking lot holding hands - that's us.)

So, somewhere in all of this planning I started reading about DVC (I had pooh-poohed it before, not understanding that DVC was NOT like a tradtional timeshare) and suddenly THAT was the answer. That would FORCE us to have a good vacation every year (and maybe 2 if they keep our meetings in Orlando), and at least every other year to our favorite place in the whole wide world. We may squander some points at some places like Mackinaw (we're in Michigan and have never been there) or even Big Cedar (HAVE stayed there and loved it), but by God we will use our points for at least a week's vacation every year from now on!

We own 150 at VWL (we're into that rustic stuff). I'm an only child and my husband has no living siblings, and with no kids, the points are just for us and should do us just fine! (My mom already winters in FL, so she certainly has no need to borrow.)

And we are going home for the first time November 1! CAN'T WAIT!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

let's see:
40 y-o psychotherapist for a small rural hospital, married to an almost 42 -y-o business manager for a small start-up franchise of a French outdoor equipment company. We have two children from my first marriage: DS is 14.5, DD is 12.

We are not rich, as we live in a rural community, and I certainly don't make the typical salary of a psychotherapist. Don't get me wrong - we are definitely not hurting, and we choose to eat in most of the year so that we can go to WDW 1-2 times a year. We financed the whole thing for 10 years, but are looking to pay it off more quickly.

We have two hobbies: long-distance hiking and Disney, not necessarily in that order.:smooth:

Most of my colleagues think I'm nuts anyway, so going often is just a quirk. I've also gotten to spread the word that WDW is not necessarily outrageously expensive.

Hello Everyone! :)
We just joined DVC a few months back. We bought a resale at BWV and are taking our first trip home last week in Oct! Very excited!! :)

I'm a stay-at-home mom to our 2 1/2 year old DD. Before becoming a SAHM I was an elementary school teacher with a Masters in Education teaching mostly first and second graders. DH works in IT at Bank One. (Please no complaints about Disney Visa Card!!)

I went on about 8 trips to WDW while growing up and my parents still enjoy taking vacations there. They are in fact going when we are at the end of October and they are excited we joined DVC. DH got his first taste of WDW on our honeymoon in 1994. He had a great time and we had a fantastic honeymoon. However due to financial constraits of buying our first home we vacationed mostly at DH's families beach house and went on a few skiing trips, but no WDW. After DD arrived we thought it was time to introduce her to the World. We took DD after she turned a year and got HOOKED and immediately planned to take a trip once a year. Okay now that's up to two a year! :) I looked into DVC (and knew it was right for us, DH however needed more convincing) and rented points from a member for our trip last Nov. at OKW. Ten minutes into that one bedroom villa and DH was asking a slew of DVC questions - I got him!! :) We toured all the properties and decided we wanted BWV as a "home." We waited patiently for the right resale and bought our BWV villa. :Pinkbounc To finance we actually took a cash-out option on our house refinance and paid for our DVC and the best part was our mortgage payment still dropped! How cool is that? I really like that I only have to pay dues for a week of WDW vacations till 2042!! :Pinkbounc :bounce: Of course I want more points now!!!!!!

Only our 2nd year with DVC.

Prior to that, we had gone to WDW (staying onsite) in '95, 97 and 2001 and stayed at DL in '96. We considered DVC too good of a deal to pass up. Though my wife was more interested in DVC, I spend 100 times more time in researching resorts, transportation, etc. All she does is tell me where and when we are going to a DVC Resort (stayed @ HH last year, will be @ VB and VWL this year) and I plan the how. Oh yeah, she also plans our character breakfasts and "fine dining" meals (she hasn't done poorly in her selection).

BTW, DW is a University of Kentucky graduate (Class of '82), a SAHM (DS5 & DS2.5), while I am a Central Michigan graduate ('90) and currently a "road manager" (a.k.a. dispatcher) for a trucking company.

This December will be our first trip to WDW with our DS's. DS5 absolutely loves any-and-everything about trains and will be so surprised and thrilled when he gets to ride on the monorail. We haven't told or explained to him anything about the monorail (we had to surprise him somehow:teeth: ) Also, my in-laws bought into DVC about a month after we did, so DVC may bring us closer together.:Pinkbounc :bounce:

Let me start by saying that I am the Disney nut in my family, followed by my DS (5). I am 25 and work in customer service; my DH (30) is an autoworker. I would consider us to be middle class, at the very most. We live in a small town outside of Kansas City, Missouri in a small 3-bedroom ranch style house. We've been married for almost 7 years...married a month after I graduated from HS. We both grew up in families that didn't vacation much. The only vacations I could remember growing up were with an Uncle that took me camping/canoeing for a week every summer as a reward for getting good grades in school (every year from 5th grade until 10th grade). My DH's vacations consisted of weekend trips to the Lake (3 hours drive).

When my son was 2, I negotiated a vacation with my DH, so to speak! He wanted a new boat, that I considered very expensive...costing twice that amount we paid for my car. Now granted he had a boat but it wasn't a big pretty one, like his friends had. Well, I wasn't giving in. I wanted us to go on vacation, and not to the lake. So, after many months of back and forth, I told him he could have the boat if we could go on vacation.... A REAL VACATION! I had a friend that had just come back from Maui and I decided that's where I wanted to go. After many sleepless nights, I decided maybe that wasn't the best idea.... would my DS (2) have fun.... how would he handle that long plane ride.... what would we be able to do that he would enjoy as much as we would? I decided this wasn't the best idea...so I started asking around. Another friend just came back from WDW with his family and said that it was the best vacation that he had ever been on! I called the TA up and told her to send me a planning book. We paid a lot of money going through the TA but at the time I didn't rally care too much. This was going to be a once in a lifetime trip and I was not worrying about how much money it was going to cost. I had been back to work for 18 months and been putting money into savings so that I would be able to take a vacation soon. We had $5000 is savings and if we used it all, good...that's what I had saved it for! I bet we used every bit of it too. We stayed 8 nights at Dixie Landings (POR) with Unlimited magic passes. Ate out 3 times a day at all the nice restaurants, and bought almost everything I seen! This was the most fun I had ever had in my life!

When we got back, all I could do is think about how much fun I had. Meanwhile, the new boat was ordered and we picked it up a month after returning from WDW.... 9 months after getting it someone else decided they like it more than we did! I was so upset. We dropped it off at the dealership to be serviced before the heavy boating season was under way. Went to pick it up a week later, on our way to the lake (vacation for 2 weeks) and it wasn't there...and the dealership didn't even know it was missing. I just cried, my DH and I worked so hard for everything we had and I couldn't see how someone could take something that didn't belong to them. Needless to say this was the worse vacation we'd ever had. Luckily, we had insurance on the boat, and our homeowners insurance covered the contents. The boat and contents were never recovered. We spent all summer running all over the place to replace the items the were in the boat. And we had to wait 3 months before we were able to replace the boat.

Almost a year went by and I spent every minute trying to figure out how I could afford for us to go back. My DH wouldn't budge, he wasn't going back for another 4-5 years. Or at least that's what I thought! My husband came home one day in January and said, did you know WDW was having a 100 Year Celebration? Well, of course I did! He asked me to start researching it and see how much it would cost and f we could afford it. Heck, half the work was already done! HAHAHA!!! At this point I had heard about DVC and looked into it a little but, I didn’t quite understand how it worked. And DH wasn't convinced it was a great thing. How could I convince him when I didn't understand it myself? So, we went and stayed at POR again, making arrangements on our own this time, spending about half the money we'd spent two years before. This was a whole new experience, how could you go someplace twice the same time of year and still have so much fun? I wanted terrible to take the tour but, our time is so limited when there are so many things to do! I didn't get a chance, too bad.

Another six months went by when I happen to tumble upon this site.....wow, there's a lot of info out here. Actually I was researching for the Cruise on DCL for May '04 when I happen to see this board! Every night I talked about all the information I was finding. DH just laughed and rolled hi eyes. Needless to say, we are now the proud owners of 150 pts (wanting more) at BCV. My DH says that this would be the only way to get me to quite talking about it so much, just let me buy and deal with it. First trip home planned for July of this year. My family and friends think we’ve lost it! They tell me I’m a Disney Nut, like that’s a bad thing! My parents are actually happy for us, as we are able to do things that a lot of people aren’t able to do. My parents also know that it is because we work very hard for everything we have. On the other hand, my DH’s parents would look down on us for this.

It’s actually very funny, I told my son we were going on DCL after he graduates from Kindergarten next spring when he’s 6. He recently turned 5 but, started saying he was tired of being 5 because he was ready for DCL. My mom asked him if he was going on vacation this summer and she told her that he wants to go to WDW. She laughed and said we created a little monster and said is was nobody else’s fault but our own. I love it! My husband and I both try to give him everything that we didn’t have growing up. I just hope that he understands that it is all because of hard work. We try to explain this to him but, I think it goes in one ear and out the other.

Hi everybody,
First I want to say thank you for all the invaluable information from all you experts out there on this board. I'm both new to DVC and to the boards.
Bought 200 pts. in September after staying in The Swan this past summer. Walk around the Boardwalk, and finally went in to see what DVC is about. Although DH have been talking about joining since we got married 9 years ago, we never did, thought we could not afford it. But after the presentation, we knew it was the right thing to do since we go about twice a year and I am such a Disney fanatic.

We both just turn 40, have a DS 8, and DD 6. I'm a Elementary school teacher and DH a Sales Manager/Lighting Specialist.

We are planning our first trip home this August and doing the 7 day cruise. CAN'T WAIT! And am already needing more points and looking for an add on. Maybe another 100 points at BWV.

Again, thank you all!
Ginny

Hi, Neighbors!

First, thanks to Nick & Cindy for continuing to bump this thread. This is great! I'm not new to the DIS boards, nor to DVC, but somehow I hadn't seen this thread going. It's really great to read about all of you.

I am 46 and DH (Snowgod on these boards) is 49. We have a DD22 (out on her own) and a DS 18, who still lives at home, starting college next fall. DH is a Computer Network technician at a local private school as well as a longtime ski and snowboarding instructor/coach (that's where the screen name came from), and I am in management at a major insurance company home office. My mom lives in FL permanently after a decade of snowbirding, and we have been traveling to FL to visit her for a number of years.

We've loved our trips to WDW, but it was the chance to buy at VB with magical beginnings that finally got us to buy in '00 while at WL celebrating our 25th anniversary. VB is very close to my Mom's home, and we felt it would be a great way to combine visits to her with a resort experience. Since buying, though, we have tended to go to WDW and have her meet us there! It is so wonderful to give back to parents after having them do for us all our young lives!

Enjoying Epcot and World showcase during the Food & Wine Festival with my mom, taking her to the Adventurers Club, seeing her without a care is just wonderful. We also took my BiL and Nephew, along with our own family, to VB and OKW last summer. We hope to plan many extended family trips in the future, and also trips with friends. It is every bit as much fun to take our kids as young adults as it was to take them as children. Even better now in some ways, as pennies don't need to be pinched as much.

We are very fortunate to be able to do this, and as many in this thread have observed, it is really an economy measure that so many non-DVCers view as an extravagance! And yes, my co-workers say, "you're going to Disney AGAIN?!?!?", so I now just say, "I'm going to FL to visit my Mom". They don't need to know that we are meeting in WDW!

Since the first 200 point purchase at VB, we have added on another 100 points at VWL, and are now looking to do another MB add-on at BCV. Yes, we do have points-fever like so many others. Retirement is a number of years away, but the idea of spending January in WDW is very appealing!

Nice to meet you all, neighbors! Look forward to reading about more of you.

I'm single....I'm 23...but I am in love with Disney (guess that's what I have in common!!!). I did not grow up going to Disney every year because we just simply didn't have the money (we are a family of 5). My first trip was in '93 and I absolutely fell in love. My parents went to the DVC presentation then, but decided they just couldn't swing it with my brother going off to college that year and 2 of us right behind him. We have taken a couple trips since then - but not as a whole family.

After graduating from college, I secured a good job and began allocating my money - car payments, college loans, and all the little things in between. Fortunately, my job is located near my home so I have moved back in with Mom and Dad for now (Not sure this is my final destination, so I haven't invested in a home). People began asking me where I was planning on investing my money - I had DVC planned the whole time - but didn't tell them because they don't understand DVC and believe I should invest in stock. My parents supported my idea 100% - they know my love for Disney and realize that this is one of the most cost effective ways to go on vacation year after year (They are kicking themselves for not joining years ago!!!)

I just returned from BCV/OKW this week - I travelled with two skeptical friends who now understand why I bought. They had to see it to believe it, but at least they now see things the DVC way. I hope to share this investment with my children someday - but for now, I will be sharing it with my parents/friends - My parents gave up so much to put me through college that it is my turn to pay them back. We will hopefully be going down next February as a family.

Sorry for the long story....but I felt it was something I could share with my DVC family - I have no regrets - and after having the most wonderful 1st trip "home", I'm looking forward to many many more over the next 39 years!!!! :) :) :)

45 married to DH 46 with DD 20 and DD 9. Live in southern suburb of Minneapolis/St. Paul. We have been self employed for 17 years and are comfortable. We are in the waste management business or simply put garbage haulers. No college degrees. When we first invested in the DVC it was a stretch on the pocketbook, but now 5 add-ons later we have never looked back or regretted it for one moment. Our children are 9 years apart which meant vacations at WDW satisfied all ages. Yesterday did another add-on at BCV and know we have many wonderful years of vacations with our girls and without, with extended family members and friends. One of our main goals when purchasing the DVC was to bless others that maybe couldn't afford to stay in the resorts that we as DVC members are accustomed to. When we see their faces and the wonder that they experience it is so worth it. We were able recently to give as a wedding present a honeymoon of 5 nights at the BCV. Both had never been to Disney World, needless to say the newlyweds now believe in the magic of Disney.

All have different ideas about investments but we have always felt when we "invested" in the DVC we invested in our family and our sanity and have gotten much more than money can buy.
We look forward to the beauty, joy, our quiet places, the entertainment and the education of going "home" again and again.

Myself (31) and DW (30) have a beautiful DD (10 months today!). I work as an Operations Manager at a Call Center and DW works with a major communications company as an account executive. So, thank goodness, we are doing okay financially. We are not quite yet DVC members (soon hopefully!), but I definitely want to provide vacations year after year for my daughter and family. So, I can see the value of being a DVC member. My 'magically-impaired' DW seems to be seein' the light lately, but isn't 100% Disney yet. I'll get her there, just you wait! :p

We bought DVC Oct 2001, but I didn't use these boards until this spring! Thanks to everyone, I've learned so much.

I am a 37 yo SAHM and a pharmacist before DS 8, DD 4 and DS 1. DH is also 37 and works in the golf course business. We love skiing, hiking and doing all the stuff kids do.

We bought because we love Disney, but we were always taking vacations to the Midwest to visit family. With DVC it forces us to go someplace other than MN/WI and we can take family with us. We consider DVC a prepaid vacation that can't be put off.

We are looking forward to a week at HH in July with friends, and a week at WDW in October with my parents!

One of the few Canadians on this board

Me (36), DW (37), DS (3) and on June 10th adding a D? to make four
Also DF (68) and DM (71) interested in coming from time to time

DW is a Drama/English teacher, I am a Senior I.T. Manager at CIBC (one of Canada's major banks)

We are upper middle class and are very fortunate to be able to afford somewhere like WDW and DVC

We bought because DW is a teacher, Toronto is cold during the winter, she gets March break off, DF and DM have a condo in Ft Lauderdale so I pledged that we would go to Florida every March break in exchange for a trip to WDW/VB every year so basically every trip will be 2 nights in FLL, then 5 nights WDW/VB then 2 nights FLL then back home to the grindstone

Thanks
jaysue

This is a great thread and ncligs should be commended for bumping it and keeping it alive.

We have been DVC members for about 5 years now and really do enjoy it. I never realized the value of a vacation until joining DVC and since then have changed my profession for that reason (and many others) I formerly was a restaurant manager/chef that wanted to spend more of my time on the important things in life including vacations, and my wife works for a large mutual fund company. Her position (and income) are what enables us to enjoy our annual pilgramage to the most magical place on earth. We have two kids, 11 and 1, and we get to see Disney through the one year old's eyes which is a treat.

Those of you who have mentioned that you are embarrassed about telling others that you are members should not be. You should be proud that you are associated with the wonderful people on this board as well as others that are members. True, this is an extravagance that not everyone can afford, and I am sure that there are many who just scrape by to afford these vacations. Be grateful that you can enjoy them, not embarrased that you do and don't worry about what others think. They will think it no matter what, and you will be in Disney when they think it.

We take our oldest out of school to go on our vacations for a variety of reasons, but this is an experience that she will have for the rest of her life. Fond family memories and wonderful experiences are just two reasons we do it. Our child gets A's in school and if that changes so will our vacationing habits. If we can do it we will, and our children will benefit from it.

Growing up neither my wife nor I came from families that took vacations like we do now, and since we can afford it, we will give our children experiences they can take with them for the rest of their lives. My hope is that everyone gets to experience Walt Disney World once in their lifetime, it will be an experience they will not forget.

Enjoy DVC as it was meant to be enjoyed, a more affordable way to experience Walt Disney World more often than you would otherwise. I wish everyone safe and happy vacations that they can cherish for the rest of their lives!!!!

Wow what a diverse group. I am a mature adult woman who bought with my best friend 11 years ago. I am a physical therapist employed fulltime. My friend is a now retired surgical nurse. I live on Long Island (NY) and she lives on Shelter Island, NY.
People often ask why 2 single women without kids bought DVC. We love going to WDW. It provided us an opportunity to have the resource for quality vacation accomodations for many years to come. We were able to take 'family' vacations with my folks and my sister and her kids-great fun.
And we love Disney! All of our DVC vacations have been wonderful-OKW, VB, HH, BWV, WL (before VWL), The Plaza in NYC, and the DL hotel.
Now if I could only figure out how to afford more DVC points (and the time to use them.)

I am 31 yo, in insurance, DH is a Captain (hopefully soon to be Major) in the USAF. His career field is civil engineering.

We have no kids yet, just our 8yo dog, a friendly mutt who loves everyone!

We live in Central Mass and met here in college. Both of us are from MA, me from the Berkshires, DH from the Cape.

We both love vacations where we "do" stuff....I cant sit on the beach, it drives me crazy....DH loves to golf....so DVC and WDW are perfect for us!

Our families think we are nuts, but my parents scramble last minute to plan vacations every year and pay high prices...I know where and when my vacations are 11 months in advance!:bounce:

I am 47 and in the brokerage business with a major Midwest bank. My spouse runs the local Chamber of Commerce and is 43. We have three kids. My son is 12 (13 in June), my girls are 8 and 6. Our home resort is Beach Club Villas and we LOVE DVC.

Just for fun (and perhaps lending credence to the rumor around our house that I should get a life), I just read every post on this thread in sequence, from my initial question to Doug's.

What a blast. Diverse bunch, certainly, but what a neat family we have here!

Keep 'em coming!

Thanks for the interesting topic, I am 45, self employed manufacturing packaging machinery, my wife 43 is a nurse, and No kids! We both love WDW and DVC, Boardwalk is our second home. We plan to stay 3-4 weeks every year over Christmas and new year.
