problems with changing a DVC members reservation into my name

Within the past hour I bought a reservation from a DVC member for next week at Old Key West. I am not a DVC member. When I called to verify the reservation I was told the name on that confirmation# was not mine. Any ideas on what I should do. It was a really good deal and I would hate to miss out on it.

I have not rented points myself but my understanding of the process is that only the member can ever call member services and deal with the reservation. The renter gets no access to the reservation and has to go through the member to do everything with it.

email the Dvc member and ask them when the name will be changed to you.

also ask for a reservation confirmation with your name on it.

this understanding is correct.

you should get a confirmation with your name on it as the guest, but you are only renting the reservation and do not "own" it. you cannot speak directly with member services to confirm or change anything about the member's reservation.

part of the "cost" of renting is the loss of control.

sometimes the resort can confirm the reservation a few days prior to arrival. (but sometimes they won't.)

I asked the gentleman to have DVC email a confirmation and he told me they don't do that.

they can send it to him - then he can forward it to you.

It will take at least 14 working days - possible less. - 10 days to get to him (sometimes less) and around 4 days to get to you.

they don't use the email - it is regular mail. the reason it takes so long.

since it's next week, ask him to fax it to you if possible when he gets it.

We're renting points from our BIL and the confirmation letter has our name on it with his listed as the DVC member. Unfortunately, he only indicated 2 guests instead of 3 so I was going to call myself to try and change it. When I asked him about it, he said not to worry since it's a 1-bedroom unit at OKW and 4 people can stay. Of course, I'm worried about it though so I may try to call myself or beg DH to call him :)

definitely ask him to change it. calling about the reservation yourself won't help - as stated above, they will not speak to you.

You should be able to have the owner change the reservation into your name. Maybe he's planning to do it when your payment clears or something? We paid ours directly with paypal and then the owner made the reservation in our name. We just got the confirmation... they do send it by mail and it took about 1.5 weeks... then she sent me a PDF of it. If your reservation is soon, I would see if he can fax it to you.

If you are not a member, Member Services shouldn't even be talking to you. And if you are a member, but a different member makes the reservation for you, you can't talk to MS about a reservation made with someone else's points. Member Services is closed for the day now, so the member might not be able to change the name until tomorrow.

Did you call the resort directly?

Do not get freaked out. first since it is next week it is short notice. Yes, the owner should call MS and have your name and anyone who is staying in room on that reservation. The problem is timing. There is no way for them to mail confirmation and then mail to you. Did you get a confirmation number? If so, just ask the owner if they put your parties name on the reservation. This is a one step process. I am an owner and I realize you have security doubts, but most of us want to help out our renters as much as we can. Again, you should have no problems checking in as long as your name is on the reservation, which you cannot check only the owner can add. I have been an owner since 1999 and can answer any questions you might have. Also, make sure you get the owners home phone and any other number so that you can contact them if any problems arise at check in. Everything should work out if you follow my suggestions.;)
