We have booked a package holiday with Thomson Direct, which included FREE car hire, however the FREE car hire did NOT include insurance so we added this on, Thomsons charged £400 for 2 weeks, which is quite expensive.

So now we have car hire with the insurance sorted and paid for.

However ive heard a couple of stories of people buying and paying for insurance before they travel and when they get there the car hire company says that they have no record of insurance being paid for.
Also the car hire company charging extras such as Breakdown cover and extra for Fuel ?

How can i prove to the car hire company that we have already paid for our insurance with Thomsons Direct?
Also will we be charged extra for Fuel? :confused3

We have paid for everything before our trip so the money we take on holiday is used for holiday treats and not extras like this.

I hope we wont have a problem :sad2:

Has anyone ever had a problem with car hire like this ?

who is the actual car hire with?

We take out the most expensive insurance which is normally called gold or platinum with dollar i think and includes a tank of fuel and extra drivers etc. We have never had to pay for anything at the deskw hen collecting the car

We never take the breakdown cover etc as we dont really feel we have to.

You will be given a voucher that should say what insurance you have paid for to give to the car hire company. This will be with your tickets

£400 for insurance alone? I'd make sure you take every peice of booking confirmation/invoices etc with you. I emailed USRENTACAR prior to booking asking whether there is nothing excluded from the price that i must have etc and will be printing the response confirming everything to take just in case. When it comes to discrepencies like this it's always best to have every piece of written proof as possible because they'll assume you don't have it or know what your talking about (which in most cases will be right) and just pay it becuase your on holiday and just want to get out the airport. I think if they do try to sell you extra insurance bits just make sure you know that you already have everything you need and tell them you don't want it and you know that you don't need it by law. Confidence is key.
Have a good trip.

I am sure that you won't have a problem but take everything with you just in case. They will try to sell you breakdown cover as an extra though. Be wary of this. We usually take it and figure it'll be a weight of our minds if something goes wrong with the car. We found from personal experience that they will only come and help you with this extra cover, if the car is undrivable. If anything else is wrong you still need to return it to the hire location.

Having said that, it is quite a resassurance to know that you have it if you need it. It is very expensive for what it gives you though.

I think your pre-booked insurance should cover you for everything you are likely to need. You will always be asked to buy something extra at the desk though. They will push the breakdown cover, sat nav, car seat, upgrades....

Just know what you are going to take and be firm but polite, it will be fine!!

:)
