Probably late to the game on this - Fantasmic/Malificent

My wife and daughter took me to see Malificent for Father's Day yesterday, and for the most part, we enjoyed the film (although Angelina's accent did keep switching between Princess Kate and Bert, the chimney sweep).

The thing that hit me leaving the theatre, is that if this film is now part of Disney canon (and maybe it's not meant to be), then Fantasmic (which I love and will see as often as I can) no longer makes sense.

I know, I know, I'm totally overthinking this and should just let it go...

I saw the show with my big kids (18-22) on Father's Day as well. It was better than I was expecting, frankly. Very well done. But yes, I do not think this show was trying to change the sleeping beauty story. Just to build out another possibility. Sort of like the Broadway show Wicked (which I just saw last month in NYC for the second time), and its relationship to the Wizard of Oz.

Put that together with Frozen (which we did after the movie) where the Queen is not really bad on purpose, and you have the modern trend where the "evil" characters are more nuanced and complicated than in the simple fairy tale versions where you had those that were good and those that were bad.

Bottom line is the Sleeping Beauty story as traditionally told will stand and the Maleficent movie will be there to say maybe the wicked witch was more complicated than we thought.

Agree!

And FYI, Wicked is actually based on a novel by Gregory Maguire of the same name. It's one of my favorite books and I was so excited when they adapted it for Broadway. He has a knack for exploring fairy tales and telling different sides/expanding on the original (see Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister; Mirror Mirror). He has also written three other novels expanding on the Oz universe.

But Fantasmic is Mickey's imagination/dream, right? Anything can happen in a dream...
