But I know you guys can give me the answer.
I'm pretty new to digital cameras. I've had one for years, but don't really know the ins and outs of them! Anyway.... I was looking for a new smart media card for my camera. I found one that says 512 mg secure digital (sd). My camera takes smart media cards- are they the same?? They look the same. But before I buy it I want to be sure I can use it! THANKS!!

Smart media and secure digital cards are not the same. Smart media is physically larger although it does have a similar shape.

maybe it wasn't such a stupid question after all!! thanks for the fast answer- I'll go looking for SM then!

really? This camera is only 4 years old!

UGH!!!! I seem to always be behind- We bought a beta VCR back in the day.... and they were no good a year later! I guess it's a GOOD thing we didn't buy that camera! It was a gifit to my DH>

Heck- I'm just gonna go get that Canon S2 IS now I think. My DD graduates from BYU in 4 weeks- I gotta get prepared!

Is there something NEWER coming that I should be aware of?? I don't want to get left behind again!

Well, there is a Canon S3 now; but the S2 is a lovely camera and is available. Memory cards are not an issue for it (SD format from memory)

I agree with Paul above. Also, as far as memory media types, Compact Flash is very popular, though SD format seems to be the media of choice in newer cameras.

I think for point and shoot SD will be around for quite a while. For dSLR CF will be around for quite a while due to its speed and enormous capacity.

:confused3 My walmart still sells smart media cards. You may want to check with them. That is what my Camera uses. I have several cards, but may buy up a couple of extra if they have stopped making them!

Okay, just checked on google. If you do a search for SmartMedia, it will come up with several retailers that are selling the cards, including Amazon.com

you can still get them I haven't seen any bigger than about 128 mb, which for an older camera is not a bad amount anyway.

SD and CF are a lot more durable than smartmedia

Thanks everyone for all the tips- I am DEFINETLY going to do something...... just have to make my decision now! ;)
