Has anyone been able to create a private backyard retreat in a new cookie cutter development? Any ideas? We plan to have a privacy fence put in after we move, but are still looking for more ideas. I loved to see pictures of your backyard oasis. :thumbsup2

We've kind of given up on privacy here. We're only allowed a 4' fence and it has to be shadowbox!

Our eventual plan is to use evergreen shrubs to make a more private enclosure. We can also put in an enclosed gazebo. Other than that, I'm still looking for ideas!

I managed to in our first house, but it helped that they left some of the tall trees in the backyard and did not clear the whole lot.

There is going to be no way in the development we are moving into.

What is a shadowbox?

We call that a "good neighbor" fence because no one gets the "ugly" side.

While I know a 6ft wall surrounding your entire house is impossible, it is the norm here. People plant fruit trees and other tall trees along the walls and you never feel like you live in a prison. It's actually peaceful and you never have to worry about neighbors. I will hate not having a wall when I move back to the States. I will miss my bars on the windows w/ locking shutters and be one paranoid person for a while too. :p Oh, and I will miss having my electric driveway gate. They are pretty cool. :teeth:

Things that make it feel inviting are screened in deck/patio, outdoor kitchens, arbors, pool/hot tub or some water feature. Water sounds will create a "oasis" feeling. Can be as simple as a small fountain on a table.

We are going to be putting in a pool & a roof over a patio w/ landscaping. The water sounds will be from the pool as it will have waterfall-type jets.

Lighting is another feature to consider. You can use the inexpensive white Christmas lights or install mood lighting around.
In the evenings you flip on the lights and it will naturally draw you outside.

Thanks for all the great ideas. Look's like there won't be much privacy, but I sure am going toi pretend there is. :)
