"Princess Bride" DVD Special Features

Last week this subject came up and a couple of people said that their copies had almost no Special Features. DD has a friend sleeping over and she brought a copy of an MGM Special Edition version DVD that is loaded with special features! There's a terrific "Making Of" segment, some footage that Carey Elwes filmed during the making of the movie and a voice over by Rob Reiner and one by the author of the book. There were two different versions released. The "bare bones" release preceded the the newer "special edition" release. The special edition is clearly labeled as such on the top of the cover.

In addition to the special features, the picture and sound were improved.

Be careful when purchasing this DVD if you want the special edition. There are still plenty of the "plain" versions floating around. Our local Best Buy has them prominently displayed at the registers. If you aren't paying attention, you'll end up with the old version.

As is typical, I got the first release of this and a week later they announced the special edition...Princess Bride is one of my top 10 movies.

This also happened with "Tron"...spent a year tracking down a copy, and then they announced the 20th anniversary DVD soon after.

I was smart with "Willy Wonka". I saw that it was full screen, and figured a Wide Screen version was on its way...I didn't get burned this time!

I did get burned on my collectors Love Bug, it's one of the sets that was poorly mastered. I have to send it back to BVHE for a new copy, but I don't want to until I look at all the Buddy Hackett interview footage.
