Jen,
One idea for the tan is to use a body lotion that has an incredibly low amount of color. The one I really like is L'Oreal Sublime Glow Daily Moisturizer + Natural Skin Tone Enhancer. I'm looking at the bottle, and it says it is designed to "add a touch of color to even out and enhance your skin's natural complexion." I'm very pale and it doesn't give you the orange look. It is extremely subtle.
Let me know if you try it and like it
Oh and tip for using it, apply it carefully as you would a self-tanner. It builds up over weeks, not days, so it can eventually show uneveness.

I'd either look orange or red. So, I'll embrace my paleness like luryloo suggested
I did it a while back /c my younger sis is very pale (Irish you know) and wanted to get some color before the prom, so I was the guinea pig. Long story short, it smelled horrible, the color does come off little by little on your clothes, so definately would not wear white, and your knuckles, knees, toes, neck and behind your ears look funny, since the spray doesn't get in crevices or little skin folds
(like between your toes or knuckles). Having some one spray you with a gun may make a difference, I did a spray booth.
) To get a good base being pale and going for small increments, I estimate it will take about a month.
