Prices Around HHI?

Silly question, but is the Wal-Mart on HHI grossly overpriced? I have an opportunity to acquire some Wal-Mart gift cards that I was thinking of using for groceries on our vacation. I'm just wondering if the groceries are marked up for the unsuspecting tourists like me:laughing:. I'm sure we'll probably forget to pack something too since we've never taken a beach vacation more than 30 miles from home.

TIA!

The Wal-Mart ON the island isn't a Super Wal-Mart, so they don't have the full grocery selection. There is one in Bluffton near Sun City that is though (it's about 30 mins. from the resort). Prices at both are normal Wal-Mart prices. There's also a Sam's Club on island if you have a membership.

Yes, that is exactly what I was hoping to hear! We are Sam's Club members so that will help too. Even though I know that there is great dining at HHI, I am trying to take this trip on my "rewards" which means I have a limited budget. I really want to relax and just "hang out" which, to me, means eating in more than eating out. I was thinking about picking up stuff like mac n cheese, frozen pizzas, spaghetti, and breakfast staples. Although fresh meat and produce would be nice, I am perfectly content with what Wal-Mart has to offer. There is not a Super Wal-Mart near us either so I am familiar with the "regular" Wal-Mart offerings. I can always get ground beef or rotisserie chicken at the Sam's Club so I think that the Wal-Mart gift cards are going to be the way to go.

On a related note, MapQuest shows that the Wal-Mart and Sam's Club are within 10 minutes of the resort. Is this accurate? I might end up dropping the DH and kids at the resort and running off to shop by myself. I want to make sure I plan enough time.

Yes, the Walmart is about 10 minutes, maybe more like 15, from the resort. Just be careful-consisitent with the "tasteful" HHI signage, it's tucked back behind trees in Indigo Run Shopping Center on the left. Just don't drive past it like we did the first time! And I agree that prices are consistent Walmart prices. We were on the Island during a real cold snap, went to Walmart to buy some gloves-2 pair for $1.99. And a little tip-at the front of the store is an area of HHI souveniers. I bought a Hilton Head mit pot holder for $5.95 there.

If you find time and the budget to go out and grab a bite then I can recommend some good food at very reasonable prices.

Fiesta Fresh - Lunch or Dinner
Asian Bistro - Lunch Buffet
Wise Guys - Dinner
Capt Woody's - Lunch or Dinner

Have fun!

Thanks for the suggestions! My kids love Chinese buffets so we'll have to look into the Asian Bistro:cutie:.

Yes, the Wal-Mart is a little hard to find but the prices aren't any different than any around here. Our GPS was a little off too. It kept telling us there was a Wal-Mart closer to us when there wasn't one closer than Indigo Run. We drove around and around and it kept telling us we had arrived at Wal-Mart. No Wal-Mart--a Sam's Club yes but no Wal-Mart!

I know you said this trip was a "budget" trip but just in case, there's a Fresh Market that's just a mile or so (maybe not even that far) from the resort. As you leave the resort, take a right on Wm Hilton Pkwy and its just down the road on the right. We went there several times during our vacation and got rotisserie chicken, macaroni & cheese, potato salad, etc. Very good stuff.

We LOVED HHI and felt it was probably one of the best vacations we've ever had. Very laidback and inexpensive because we cooked or ate in the villa a lot. We rarely eat more than breakfast in the villa while we're at WDW but at HHI we ate many meals in the villa. Well, we enjoyed eating on the picnic table on the deck for most meals. And there were no bugs! They spray at HHI (we saw the bug spray truck) and that really helps. DH played golf several days off the resort and he got eaten alive! But while at the Disney resort, we never noticed any bugs at all.

We are talking about going back again this year in October instead of our F&W Fest trip. Yep, we enjoyed it that much. :)

Don't forget about the BBQ grills. In one grilling session you can cook chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, and steaks for a week of eating!!! And while you are cooking you can play horse shoes.

The Walmart is in the same shopping center complex as Publix/ Barnes & Noble/ Outback Steakhouse, although set a bit apart from everything else. As you are coming on to the island (traveling south on highway 278) it is on the right, just before Indigo Run Plantation. There is a large brown wooded sign that says "Festival Center". Turn right at that sign and then turn right again at the stop sign. Hope that helps.

And I learned from another guest that if you don't have any grilling utensils with you, the front desk will happily lend them to you.

You guys are making me SOOOOOO excited!!

We have another winter storm headed our way, due to start dumping lake effect snow in about 30 minutes:headache:, and I cannot wait until spring break. Thinking about BBQ grills, picnic tables, golf.....ahhhh:cloud9:....73 more days!

Your GPS must have a long memory. The site of the Sam's Club used to be the site of the Wal-Mart!
