I LOVE Priceline for car rentals!
We do a lot of quickie weekend trips to Orlando, and I almost always get our car through them (just got
Avis last night for our trip next weekend). I get
Alamo most frequently, followed by Avis, and the Hertz. Hertz seems to come up when the rate is really, really, really low at non-peak times. I get a baseline rate at Orbitz and also see what I can do with coupon codes, and then I bid below that. There's only been a couple of times when I couldn't get anything, and on both those occasions I booked Thrifty through Orbitz.
Hertz is the only offsite location that Priceline deals with, but don't worry about that...I've actually been in my car and on my way faster with Hertz than with onsite Alamo!
I've never been treated like a second class citizen for booking via Priceline. Sometimes the insurance pitch doesn't even seem as pushy, probably because they figure I am a tightwad. I've also got some great free upgrades, including economy to a Vibe (Alamo) and economy to a RAV4 (Hertz). That is the exception rather than the rule, but it does happen.
And if you have done your research but get a message that you should bid higher before you submit it, just ignore that. I've gotten that many times and still had my bid accepted.
Happy bidding!
