i admit i've been spoiled for several years-2 local indie grocery stores have traditionally done big case sales once a year so i stock up on what our household considers 'basics' (constant/high volume use) so there have been times when i haven't repurchased an item for 1-2 years so while i'll likely see a price per unit increase it's offset by the case discount and it doesn't hit me as hard mentally b/c i figure 'yeah, prices go up over a 1-2 year period'. flash forward to the present-one store got sold/no longer doing the sale, other store is going through a shakeup w/suppliers so no sale this year. i have to restock off traditional shelves and frankly-the price of some items is shocking to me.

i know prices will vary by region but i'm curious-what (for you personally) is a reasonable price (not the spectacular lost leader price you can occasionally get) per can for the following canned products (and please indicate if you buy brand name or store brand)-

canned veggies (green beans, corn, peas)
canned beets (NOT pickled)
canned beans (black, kidney, pinto)
canned tomato products (sauce, diced, crushed)
canned olives (small size-chopped or diced).

thanks in advance.

You can go on Kroger.com or walmart.com to see prices
Kroger-Store brand diced tomatoes $0.49, Red Gold/Hunts $1, Muir Glen (organic) $1.49 (although there is a coupon now bringing it down to $1)
Kroger-store brand beets $0.69
Kroger black beans $0.59 generic...organic or Bush's $1

Generally, if I can get brand name and/or organic about $1/can, I will buy that. If not, I just go with the store brand that is closer to 50-75 cents

I also would say .50 to 1.00 for most of these items dependent on sales. We typically buy store brand unless a sale/coupon makes a better deal.

I don't spend more than $1 per can and actually try to keep it below $.80 if possible. I mainly buy beans and tomatoes.

November and December are good times to stock up on canned goods before Thanksgiving and Christmas. Lots of sales at that time.

agreed-also a good time to stock up on other non perishables-i gasped the other day when a saw a single box of stove top stuff mix selling for over $2-i usually buy enough to last the year at thanksgiving when i can get them for 75 cents-1.00 at most.

i think with the canned goods it's just sticker shock. i've only bought every year or two and they've been the store brand so i just haven't paid attention to what the going rate is. i never really noticed when i've gone to walmart for other items b/c the ones around us have taken to excelerated marketing of the walmart 'great value' brand by either entirely eliminating competing brand names for some products or marking up those brand names to 100% higher than the true value's (and 50% higher than any competitor's even non sale price for the brand name).

sadly-no krogers option around here.

What prices I see vs What prices I buy...
Canned vegs - $.45 (Aldi) to up to $1.99 (regular grocery) - $.45 is my buy point
Canned beets (I don't buy - I only buy fresh, so I don't look)
Canned beans - $.55 (Aldi) to up to $1.29 (regular grocery) - Aldi's has very few options, so I buy from $.55-$1 (I won't ever pay more than $1)
Canned tomato products - $.25 (smallest size Aldi paste)/$.49 (small Aldi sauce) to $1.59 for regular size not on sale grocery - I buy this at Aldi's unless grocery gives me a great coupon - and I buy the small containers and use 2 if needed, so I don't ever get stuck with an open can - I'll spent between $.25-$.88 (diced is most expensive since it's a bigger can)
Canned olives - $.99 (on sale grocery) to $3.99 (regular price grocery) - I buy 2 cans/jars when grocery puts in on the uber sale...I don't use often, so that lasts enough to the next big sale...

Canned beans (15 oz) are .50-.70
Canned olives-- I'm assuming you mean black olives, which are around a dollar for the 15 oz cans, unsliced
Tomato products vary a lot depending on if they're regular or marzano tomatoes. 28 oz cans are about a $1.30 but up to about $4 for marzano tomatoes on sale. I actually buy the huge, industrial size cans of tomato products at Costco. I don't know how many ounces they are, but it's not a family size can. They're $3-$4
Not sure about beets or veggies as we get them fresh or frozen usually.

.50 - 1.00 per can
I think where you shop, what brand you buy, and where you live are factors.
Canned corn is 39 cents for the least expensive brand, Double Luck at Walmart. Great Value Green Beans are 45 cents. Chopped or sliced olives here are about 69 cents.

Our local Kroger store (Fred Meyer) always has some sale on cans of black beans. Original price is usually $0.79 for regular (organic are a bit more). Fiesta corn is $0.59, regular cans of corn are $0.79 most of the time.

Check out Aldi, I shop and stock a lot of my pantry basic from Aldi and have been very please with the items I have purchased. I have bought canned tomatoes around 50 to 80 cent depending if I am just getting the basic or with some seasoning. Chicken and beef broth for 49 cent a can... I have gotten them for 39 during the holidays so I am hoping for the same sale. I really haven't noticed olives at Aldi...

I really don't buy that many canned good. I wait for Publix to have 10 for 10 and then I get Green Giant, or Hunts... White corn, whole green beans, pole bean or Italian beans ( same thing just a different name). As far a veggies we prefer fresh or flash frozen. Walmart does offer them but they are a seasonal item... So when they have what my family likes then I stock up the extra freezer with them. Publix will sometimes have a pretty good sale on canned beans, I really only buy a dozen or so cans a year normally of BOGO...

We have BJ's Warehouse membership, and they have really good coupons as well they take manufacturers coupons. I saved 35 dollars last trip using their coupons and my own manufacturers coupons.

thanks for all the info. i did some research, scoured the ads for local stores as well as on-line (so long as they offered free shipping so it didn't increase the price) and ended up w/some deals i feel comfortable with-

beans (black and kidney)-kroger (through fred meyers) 50 cents a can
broth (beef and chicken)-again kroger 50 cents a can
veggies-(libby) 50 cents a can
shoestring beets-78 cents a can (some newer to our area brand called 'food club')
tomato products i'm holding off for some kind of sale (a couple are brand specific).

Chopped or sliced olives here are about 69 cents.

that's what i historically remember paying but the prices here have been insane in the last couple of years-getting a can for just over a dollar has been a tremendous sale so i was thrilled when the store i normally get them from did a case deal for me at 69 cents each (i'm well stocked-4 cases of 24 cans each so i'm set for a year or so).
