Price of the "extra bun" has soared!

I was just thinking about our recent trip a few weeks ago and thought I would post for those who buy the "extra bun" and split a double cheeseburger. Last time we were there in '09 I paid $1. This trip dd and I were once again going to split a burger and the lady said--you may not want to as the price is $3.15 for a bun now. This was at DHS and the lady suggested an extra Hot dog bun instead. I took her advice and got that for $1, but it was hard to eat.
Next time we were in AK, I asked for the extra bun again, and was told the price again. I told her to add it to the cost. I cant eat a double burger (dont like that much beef) so dd20 and I have always split. Anyway, $3.15 was still cheaper than another whole burger, but wanted to give anyone a heads up that slpits like we do. I told DH that next trip, we would just take our own buns in

I agree, I'd definitely just cut the burger in half before paying $3.15 for one bun. If I was hungry again later, we could all split a popcorn for just $3.09.

It's no secret that the extra bun has become a fairly common thing and it's primarily to avoid paying the cost of two single burgers. When you do the math Disney was losing a lot with this. Likely the amount hit a threshold they couldn't accept in these tough times.

The prices vary a bit but based on the lowest I found a double cheeseburger is $6.49 and a single $5.49 so 2 singles cost $10.98 and a double with bun cost $7.49 at the old price. That's a saving of $3.49 or 31.8%. Under the new pricing the double with bun is $9.64 for a saving of $1.34 or 12.2%.

Still a pretty good percentage saving and it's very hard seeing any business maintaining a 32% loss especially in hard times.

I ask for the bun while waiting for my food, they will give it to you for free! I did not intend for this to happen, and was willing to pay, but they are usually so busy, that they do not care.

They will not always give you a bun for free. The usual procedure is to charge for it. The price, as noted, varies. Disney would prefer that guests buy two single burgers rather than split a double.

Not an apologia, but once you get the second bun you will be going over to the condiments area and getting all the stuff you would normally put on the burger onto two burgers using up twice the condiments that would normally be put on a double patty burger. I realize that the costs are not significant, but the costs are still there.

DD and I always split the double burger but we never get another bun, especially now with the yuck buns they serve. We just split the burger in half, less bread. If it gets messy we get knives & forks!!

Definately worth carrying an extra bun with you if you plan to do this! A bag of good buns from the grocery store won't even cost you $3.15

I've never done this...never even though about doing it actually but it is a good money saving idea

What's the difference between buying 2 burgers or buying a double burger and an extra bun? Has the price of the "extra bun" soared or has the "discount" given to guests who want to put the second burger on the bun shrunk?

I'm sure the price of an extra bun was intended for families that wanted bread for a young child. Too many guests were using it as a technique to reduce the cost of two burgers. Too many guide books and internet sites made the suggestion.

Why bring your own buns? Guests who want to save money should just bring their own bottled water and sandwich.

For me If I were paying OOP, I'd take the free plastic knife and cut the double burger in half. This way I'd still have the same amount of meat as a single and less calories because of less bread. All this for the same price of $6.49. Controlling my maximum OOP expense, especially in hard times.

The buns are "crappy" so why don't people just cut the burger in half? Less of a bun to eat that way, but same amount of the burger.

we're just planning out our CS credits now, and DH and I will split a couple of meals. My intention is to get the double burger and just cut it in half - why bother with a second bun?

So many of the adult meals seem to come with fries, so splitting a meal is still a ton of food. (especially since I plan on eating a dole whip every single day too, haha!)

I was on the cut the burger in half bandwagon for awhile until a friend with two little boys pointed out that she would have problems if one kid got a bigger half.

(Wasn't there a commercial where the solution to that is let one kid cut the burger in half and the other kid make the first choice as to which half they wanted?)

There was also an explanation that some adults liked to pile on the toppings and you can't pile them on half a burger.

I personally agree and my kids won't eat the buns anymore with the burgers or hot dogs anyway, so I think it's a lot, but for some people it's worth it for the savings if they want their own complete burger.

...and Cheshire Figment, I agree with you if I were looking at it from a business perspective. I see your point, but with the condiments it probably all works out even in the end. Some really use a lot of them, some don't at all. I'm sure the price of all of that is already figured into the equation, but your point is a valid one.

I have to admit I have never thought of buying and extra bun , but it reminds me of the time I saw a family with 7 kids both parents had bought a large drink then the mother took out small bathroom size dixie cups and proceeded to pour some of the drink into each cup for the children while dad stood there and guzzled his large drink down all by himself, I am all for trying to save as buck but gee wiz
