I read the sticky at the top of the board but that price was quoted back in 04! Trying to see how much it will cost for my fil to rent one daily and how it works! If we are arriving every morning 30-40 prior to opening will he have a problem getting one?

Also my fil is a big guy....6'9 and 350 lbs, will the chairs at WDW accomodate him or will he have to rent one off property? We were trying to just have him use the parks because we are renting a mini van for all of us.....I know we cannot get one in those!

thanks for the info!

The price that is quoted in the disABILITIES FAQs thread is the current price for ECVs at the parks.
The small picture on that thread is from last October - WDW got new ECVs in all the parks during 2007.
The park rental ones are heavy duty; I'm not sure of the top weight limit for them, but Cheshire Figment probably knows.

You should have no problem getting one if you are at the parks before opening. You will find the stroller/wheelchair/ECV rental area very close to the entrance of each park. You just go up, pay your money and you are set.

You can also check the websites for some of the off-site companies. It is possible to get ECVs that come apart into several pieces for transport. Depending on how many people you have in your mini van, you may be able to get the ECV in the back.

PS - I'm curious why you said this:

Is there something in the disABILITIES FAQs part that makes it look like the information was not updated?

When I went to the FAQs page I saw the info on post #2 and looked at the date of the post....'04. I did not notice any other date. Did I miss it? Probably so...sorry!

thanks for the info!

that's OK.
The date at the top of the post is a 'time/date stamp' that was generated when the post was first put on. It is used by the computer the information is stored on and it never changes.
If you scroll all the way to the bottom of that post, you can see when that particular post was last edited.

I figured if you made a mistake and told us about it, some other people probably made the mistake and did not say anything.
Knowing where you made your 'mistake' , I can add a note to the first post telling people not to pay attention to the date it was posted, but to the date it was edited.

I just checked with the WDW Internal Site and found they are officially at 350 pounds. However, I will sometimes use one where the limit is about 60 pounds less than I weigh. The only thing is the battery charge will not last as long, and it is slow on hills compared to my normal ECV.

Also, in my shopping for a new ECV, I have seen ones similar to Disney's that seem to have a 450 limit.

Thanks, Cheshire.
I knew you would know. I'm going to add this info to the FAQs thread.

We will be going in September. I'm told that crowds are lower, so would that mean I shouldn't have a problem getting a WDW Electric chair? I rented from an off site last visit, but we need the extra space in our room this year. Thanks,
G

September is normally not that busy. If you get to the park by 10:30 or so, you should have no problem.

One clarification though; what you want to rent is called a scooter or an ECV. An electric wheelchair is different and they don't rent electric wheelchairs. if you ask for one, they will say they have none.

i went September 1998 and hit two little bumps which was labor day weekend which is the first weekend of September and Night of Joy which meant a lunatic in the parking lot hitting my car with his fist. Rental company did not notice the tiny ding. The park on those days closed earlier and there was a major traffic problem of people exiting and entering parking lots. I had other things to do so it was not a problem the day after Labour Day was quiet and the place became mine almost, lines were short and at times I did not need to use a GAC, just waddled right in. Check the calendar for September and plan around those little bumps like during Night of Joy go to Epcot or MGM instead of MK. October until near Halloween is also a good quiet time to go.

You mentioned using a van I assume that means you are staying off site. We stayed at OKW on our last trip. The front desk helped us rent from an outside company. I believe that they have some that can be put in a van easily. It was very convenient and my father inlaw was able to drive right onto the busses in disney. The lower down to street level for the convenience of those on evcs. The price was the same as if we rented them inside the park every day and we were able to keep them with us. The fron entrance to the units at OKW had a covered walkway so covering would have not been a problem, but we had a two bedroom and at OKW they are huge so there was plenty of room.

There is a list of off-site rental companies that are recommended by DIS posters in the disABILITIES FAQs thread.
When making the reservation, it's a good idea to tell the company how you plan to transport it to the park. That way, if you need it to come apart to fit into a van, they can make sure the one you get will do that.
