I will have a (just turned) 12 year old staying with me soon. She has a history of not being responsible on a computer, but for the most part, her mother yells but lets her do what she likes. She has been on the computer constantly for the past year. I will have plenty of "other plans" for her for her vacation here, but she'll want to be online every minute we're home.
I don't have kids, so I don't really want to buy childsafe software I only need for one week out of the year. Is there any way to severely limit what someone can do on your computer? For example, if I want her to only be able to email her friends and go to a few (approved) websites, is there any way I can set the computer to do that? Trusting her to do the right thing doesn't work, and while I look over her shoulder every few minutes, she is very sneaky. It's hard because as I said, she's used to doing what she likes to a large degree.
I plan to set up expectations before she comes, so I need to figure out if I'm going to let her use the computer at all. She's actually a really good kid in most ways and I love her to pieces. Thanks.
