Which looks better when pressing a penny - a shiny new one or an older tarnished one? I could have sworn I read different sides for both but I'm not sure.

ONLY ONE MORE DAY AND WDW HERE WE COME!!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Well i have many of these and I think the shiny new ones look better. But that's just my opinion.

If you shine up the pre '83 coins they are all copper and there are no nickle color strecks in them as the newer ones sometimes have. You can clean them with a polishing compound among other methods, then after they are pressed coat them with a clear coat to keep them the right color. Either way they are nice low priced soveniers.

On my last trip, I used new pennies, and I used pre-83' pennies.
The verdic? The detail of the design shows up better in the new pennies. You can only shine the older pennies so much.

So I'll only use new pennies now. :D

On our last trip to the world, I searched all over my home town at every bank for the shiniest pennies and was thrilled when we got nearly a roll of them. HOWEVER.....when we pressed them they looked great and within a few days they began to look as though we had them for years. Sorry to disappoint anyone, but I don't think it matters unless you do clear coat them.

It is still so fun to make them though!!

I purchased a Penny Press Book and put the pennies in the protective pocket right after pressing. This was 4 months ago and my pennies are still very shiny and new looking today.

We also bought a Pressed Penny Book (back in 2001) and we went through our "Penny Bear" and pulled out all the shiniest pennies in the bank and rolled them up and took them with us. Nearly 4 years later and they are still shiny. Maybe because we put them in the book right away? We did the same thing this last trip (beginning of April) and this Pressed Penny Book had Princesses on it so my girls LOVE it!!! Pretty shiny pennies are an awesome souvenir and the girls love taking them to school to show them to everyone!

WOW!!! That is great news for our upcoming trip. We have never purchased the penny books but will put that at the top of our list this time. Maybe I could clean the ones I have and add them once we get the book. This time when we press pennies, I will be sure to slip them in the book soon after.

Thanks for the great tip!!! ::yes::
