Ok, I'm back from the eye Dr with a question about prescription sunglasses. The glasses I get under my insurance are free (had to choose from a rather small selection, though). I don't wear sunglasses often, but we are going to WDW in Oct, and I would like to be able to see the shows with the benefit of sunglasses. Dr's office showed me really cute glasses with a magnetic clip on sunglass, but these would be an additional 200  , or I could get a separate pair of sunglasses at my expense (about 100+), or I could get transitional lenses on my free glasses for $70 more. These would be clear, then turn darker gray in sunlight. Which is the best option? I'm thinking transitional, but is that too much to spend? Please give me advice....

I have a seperate pair of perscription glasses which I really like although you do have to carry your regular pair with you if you go into a darkened area.

If you do not regularly wear them however, I would not purchase any just for a Florida trip.

Get a visor or some cheaper sunglass clips to go over your glasses (purchased at a discount or drug store) just for the trip.

My DH swears by the transitional lenses (they don't get dark enough for me).

I did get a pair of the magnetic clip-on's - in addition to - a pair of regular glasses...since it was my 1st time with bifocals, I justified it gave me a back-up pair of glasses.

Sorry to say, I DID lose the magnetic sunglasses part at WDW last spring, which cost me $50 to replace. So I tend now to "switch back and forth", as I did with prescription sunglasses.

If you really don't wear sunglasses often, and you don't care about looking like a dorkus (which I did the REST of my WDW vacation ;) ), simply get a pair of drugstore clip-ons for less than $10.

i have clip on sunglasses for my glasses they are nice but not something i'd spend 200.00 on. My dad has transional lens and loves them but it's a personal thing I feel. as for buying seperate perscription sunglasses i wouldn't do that just for wdw but i hate clutter so carrying 2 prs of glasses would drive me crazy. I think I would just go get cheap pr of clip on sunglasses from Drug store for now. Another idea that maybe an option is see if your Dr can "recycle" Frames maybe you have a old pr of glasses from a mother that you like frames of, they maybe able to change these into prescrip. sunglassess for you.

no line bifocals for inside and just my distance in sunglasses. Yes, I have to switch all the time, but I have done it for 35 years, I'm used to it. I have had clip ons made for the frames I had, but you still need to store them safely when not wearing them. I will be getting new ones soon, I am torn between magnetic clips or just 2 pair, one clear one sun. Transition lenses are not dark enough for me as sun glasses. If I go with 2 pair, I will be getting no line for the sunglasses, too. So I can read at the pool.

I've had both transitional lenses and prescription sunglasses and I much prefer the sunglasses. Also, the transitional coating is easily scratched.

I currently have the magnetic clip on sunglasses. I really like them. I have had them for about 10 months now and have not had a problem with them. I did go to WDW in November with them and the only time I had a problem was when I wore them on the water slide; when I hit the water, they came off - but I did find them. Before these I had to switch back and forth from my prescription glasses to my prescription sunglasses; the switching back and forth gave me a headache so I was very happy when my eye dr. suggested them. Also the ones I have are polarized - which means it cuts down on the glare. I am very sensitive to the sunlight - I have to wear sunglasses and a hat, so the transitional ones definitely woudn't be dark enough for me. For me the cost was the same as 2 pair of glasses - regular and sunglasses - that I normally would have bought.

If you have a Wall WOrld (Walmart) near you go there. I got a pair of sunglasses there for my last trip. They have special lenses that block out UV rays like the ones in your car, actually better. I had the applied to the inside and out of the glasses. I also paid extra for the tint to be brown as the frames are brown, I even have a cool frame and I paid just under $100. These glasses are awesome...I wish I could leave them on all the time, because the glare is completely gone. Check it out...I have the same deal so I got regular glasses through my insurance and these at Wally World :)

I have prescription sunglasses with polarized lenses and I urge you to either get polarized clip ons or a separate pair of polarized sunglasses.

I don't know in which part of the country you live but if it is anywhere in the sunbelt you definitely need them (actually--if you live somewhere that gets snow in winter, you need them).

They are safer for driving, cut down on glare, may keep you from having cataracts by age 40 (like my younger sister) and will definitely help protect you from melanoma of the eyeball.

I have an 77 year old relative in East Texas who now has a glass eye because of melanoma of the eyeball. The chemo seems to have stopped the cancer. Her ophthamologist bemoaned the fact that she did not have polarized lenses as a young person. He believes that may have made a huge difference.

You can purchase non prescription polarized clip ons. If you need to be frugal that might be a good idea.

I used to have transitionals but they never got dark enough for me. I have polarized prescription glasses and I absolutely LOVE them.

I had the transitional lenses put in my eyeglasses and they could never get them to go dark enough. I took them back several times. My eyes are sensitive, so I just went ahead and bought a separate pair of prescription sunglasses. It does mean that I have to carry two pair of glasses, but it is better on my eyes.

I would not do transitional -- sometimes they don't clear up all the way or fast enough when you move indoors.

Here is what I did, I used to have the clip-ons, but they scratched the lframes up. Now I have a regular clear prescription pair and I use the clip-ons for my sunglasses only. I get stronger lenses put in as needed. That way if I'm on vacation and my regular glasses break, I can just remove the clips and have another pair of glasses. Also the clips are nice when you move indoors -- you don't have to physically carry two pairs of glasses, just take off the clips.

I think you definitely need prescription sunglasses for Disney.

My DH has magnetic clips for some of his glasses and he has separate prescription sunglasses. He is somewhat of a glasses nut, so he has many, many pairs. He likes both and he's used to carrying a case around for the clip or extra glasses.

For me, it's contacts all the way and a pair of non-prescription sunglasses. These go on top of my head when I go inside, so invariably, I forget that they are there several times a day and panic that I lost them.

there are alot of long post on this thread  , I will just add it is more important to look good then to see good

And who P.Diddied in your Corn Pops :p

Just because we can't all look as "mahvelous" as you...

Contacts and a pair of really good (optically correct) sunglasses.

Optically correct meaning, not the $5 pair you get at the supermarket...those are so BAD for your eyes both in lack of UV protection and in distortion.

My glasses came with the magnetic clip on and I love them...from Wally World. I paid under $200 for them. I have to say that until you get use to having the clip on you may lose it....I did once but have had this pair for over one year.;)

I vote for the prescription clip-ons. The transitional never turn dark enough to really prevent glare problems in direct sunlight. The drugstore clip-ons can scratch your eyeglasses and usually are not as attractive as the presciption ones, but more to the point, don't always fit over your eyeglasses as perfectly as they should. Also, you should wear sunglasses everyday, even in cloudy weather to prevent gluacoma and other preventable eye diseases. Consider the money an investment in your health.

My dh has some clip on sunglasses that are really pretty nice. They match the shape of his frames and look like real glasses. They were about 40 bucks I think and we got them at the dr's office.
